Wong Jing questions Tony Leung's HKFA win
17 Apr – Controversial filmmaker Wong Jing recently expressed his disappointment over Tony Leung Chiu Wai winning Best Actor for the sixth time at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards.
As reported on Mingpao, the director shared his feelings on Weibo following the prestigious event, saying that he believed that Jennifer Yu, David Chiang, and Rachel Leung are all worthy of their categories, especially David who won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "In Broad Daylight".
"On the contrary, 'The Goldfinger' is by no means Tony Leung's best performance. It is a bit over-the-top and far less strained than 'Lust, Caution' and '2046'," he said.
Wong also stated that if he was Tony, he would follow the examples of Alan Tam and the late Leslie Cheung, who announced their departure from such award events to give opportunities to the younger generation.
It is noted that despite winning it for the sixth time, Tony's last HKFA Best Actor accolade came 19 years ago when he won for the Wong Kar Wai movie, "2046".
Tony bested contenders such as Bowie Lam ("In Broad Daylight"), Lo Siuyea ("Time Still Turns the Pages"), Da Peng ("Dust to Dust"), and Dayo Wong ("A Guilty Conscience") at the recently held ceremony.
