Why Trump's Second Term Has People Rushing to Buy New Appliances

As President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration approaches in January 2025, many Americans are wondering how a new administration will impact their lives as well as their real estate portfolios. But should they be concerned about their upcoming appliance purchases, too?

According to one Instagram content creator, yes. User Deena Lang recently posted an Instagram reel saying that a lot of "rich people" are upgrading their appliances now—and selling their hand-me-downs on Facebook Marketplace. Why? Well, it all has to do with tariffs that may go into effect once Trump takes office. Trump has said he plans to place tariffs on imports from three countries: Canada, Mexico, and China.

While Trump says he will add a 25 percent tariff to imported goods from Canada and Mexico, he also plans to implement "an additional 10 percent tariff, above any additional tariffs." And, since many appliances are made and shipped from overseas, your next dishwasher, laundry machine, or refrigerator might cost a lot more in the not-so-distant future.

Lang might be concerned about the future of our home appliance prices, but her Instagram Reel was met with mixed reviews. While some people were quick to clap back—one person whittled her logic down to "girl math" and her kitchen "middle class"—others agree with her reasoning.

"We just picked up a 36-inch Viking cooktop for a fraction of what it cost new," one person commented. "So, yes, this is a thing." "I have a ton of clients pull the trigger on renovations to try and get appliances purchased before any tariffs take effect," said another Instagrammer, who identifies as an interior designer. "These aren’t rich families getting rid of new appliances but yes: Lots of folks are anticipating higher costs next year and acting accordingly."

So, does that mean you should make that new dishwasher or fridge purchase now? Not so fast, says one commenter. "Wouldn't recommend it unless you're in need of one," they wrote. "More expensive appliances mean more expensive parts and repairs in a lot of cases." While the exact lifespan will vary by make, model, and upkeep, many fridges, freezers, and other gadgets can last well over 10 years. In other words, if you recently splurged on a shiny new appliance, you might want to hold off on buying another one.

That said, if you are in the market for new appliances anyway, you don't necessarily have to rely on Facebook Marketplace. Retailers like Best Buy and Wayfair are running major end-of-year sales right now. Below, are a few favorite deals to consider.
