These Were the Airports with the Highest Thanksgiving Wait Times Last Year, According to a New Report

The worst airport had a staggering average of 54.1 minutes.

Thanksgiving travel inevitably means long airport wait times, and that’s especially true in Miami where wait times exceeded any other major airport last year.

The average peak security wait at Miami International Airport (MIA) was a whopping 54.1 minutes over the Thanksgiving holiday last year, according to a report from Jettly, a private jet booking service. That was nearly a minute longer than the second-highest wait time at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where passengers suffered from an average peak security wait of 53.6 minutes.

New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) came in third with an average peak security wait of 53.2 minutes. Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) rounded out the top five.

“With the holiday season just around the corner, millions of Americans are getting ready to face the crowds at airports,” Jettly said in their report. “Our analysis of last year's holiday travel … can help you plan ahead and navigate the busy travel season with a little more ease.”

Beyond just long wait times, FLL also had the highest percentage of delayed flights over Thanksgiving last year with 21.2 percent of flights taking off later than expected. That was a notable increase over fellow Florida airport Orlando International Airport (MCO), which delayed 19.8 percent of Thanksgiving holiday flights.

The report comes as the 2024 holiday travel season is shaping up to be a busy and expensive one with travelers expected to spend more this year. Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 28.

While there is no guarantee, travelers can increase their chances of avoiding potential travel snafus by choosing direct flights to lessen the chances of missing a connection and booking early morning flights since they tend to have higher on-time performance rates.

Travelers can also try to shorten airport wait times by enrolling in TSA PreCheck, which allows passengers to leave their shoes, belts, and light jackets on and leave laptops and liquids in their bags when going through security.

Ryanair trims passenger growth target on Boeing delays
STORY: Europe's largest low-cost airline, Ryanair, on Monday (November 4) trimmed its passenger growth target for next year.That was due to Boeing delivery delays.The plane maker was meant to deliver 15 737 MAX aircrafts next year.But Ryanair assumed that number was high risk due to Boeing's ongoing strikes.Ryanair cut its passenger target for the year to March 2026 to 210 million passengers from 215 million.However, it said lower air fares throughout a poor summer were now increasing.The Irish airline reported $1.95 billion in after-tax profit for the six months to the end of September.It marked an 18% fall from last year as average fares fell 10%.But the group’s CEO Michael O’Leary said fares in the current third quarter are set to be only "modestly lower" than the same period last year.Ryanair’s CFO said ticket price weakness has been partly due to the impact of high interest rates on consumers.And also the decision by a number of online travel agents to stop selling Ryanair flights in early December following legal and regulatory pressure.But the CFO said the issue with travel agents was "pretty much behind them" due to new agreements with a majority of them.Shares in Ryanair were down in early trading.

Marriott has room to grow in Asia outside of China: Analyst
Global hotel chain Marriott International (MAR) cut its full-year outlook in connection to declining revenue in the Chinese market. Marriott just missed estimates on its top and bottom lines, posting $6.25 billion in revenue and adjusted earnings per share of $2.26. "You're seeing groups [bookings] still perform very strongly, business transient remaining solid. But it's really the higher end leisure that has become a problem," Jefferies managing director David Katz says. "Outbound travel versus inbound is still out of balance. Weather is still weighing on some travel and has impacted, and, frankly, we're seeing room rates and that consumer just start to push back on the level of cost for high-end leisure travel." Katz tells Yahoo Finance that consumers are also "[pushing] back on how much higher they are willing to pay" even for domestic US travelers, subsequently spreading "across different markets in different ways." He sees there is still room for Marriott to grow in Asia-Pacific non-China markets.
