Wait, Is A Second 'Barbie' Film In The Works?

It has become the highest-grossing film of 2023 , the highest-grossing film by a solo female director and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. It’s fair to say that Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie film has been a total and unequivocal success.

The film, which tells the story of Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie venturing into the 'Real World' to learn which hapless human has triggered her malfunctions, caused a cultural ruckus upon its release in July and, having amassed a series of fans, questions are now being floated about a potential sequel.

Could they? Would they? Well, this is everything we know so far about a potential Barbie sequel.

Has A Barbie Sequel Been Confirmed?

Not as such. Robbie has stated that she ‘can't imagine’ there being a follow-up film to Barbie, but Gerwig has said she'd like the film to be ‘the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies’, even if she has no specific ideas about how to do it herself.

Meanwhile, Robbie told Time in June 2023 that she’d been involved in conversations about sequels, but nothing was set at the time.

'It could go a million different directions from this point,' she explained. 'But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.'

At a BFI conversation in London this week, according to Variety, Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the film, was asked about the possibility of a follow-up, stating: ‘Oh, I'm not going anywhere near that. We really know nothing..’

Gosling's co-star America Ferrera also took part in the event, and echoed Gosling’s sentiments, but did tease the prospect of Ken getting his own film.

She said: ‘We have no information. I will say, what Greta and Margot have said is they did not set out to make a franchise. They put it all out on the table. Every bit of it that they loved and that they knew to do, they did. Which is refreshing, right?

‘We're not setting it up for 20 years of Barbie movies. But then again, I know nothing, so there might be 20 years [of Barbie]… or a Ken spinoff?’

'Can it be a husky Ken?' Gosling added. 'Can I play Husky Ken, like Sandwich Ken? Can I play that Ken next time?'

What has Greta Gerwig said about a Barbie sequel?

Gerwig recently shared that they 'had way too much material for Ken. We would write, and write and write'.

In a recent interview with 60 Minutes alongside her partner and Barbie collaborator, Noah Baumbach, Gerwig didn’t rule out the possibility of a Ken-focussed film. When asked whether she would ever make a Ken film, Gerwig 'laughed' and said that she couldn’t comment. 'I mean, the truth is, you know…I guess we’ll see,' Gerwig said with a smile.
