Val Kilmer makes his Iceman return in "Top Gun" sequel

8 Jun – It's been almost three years since we last heard news of Val Kilmer's involvement in the sequel to "Top Gun", now it's been reported that Kilmer is indeed returning.

Kilmer will once again be playing Iceman, according to The Wrap, joining Tom Cruise who will be reprising his Pete "Maverick" Mitchell role.

Kilmer first teased his return in November 2015, when he posted on his Facebook that he accepted the offer for the project without reading the script first.

He did later follow up on his announcement with another post, stating that "This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post."

Things have been quiet for the project since, though Cruise updated last year that the sequel will be called "Top Gun: Maverick", so named because it will follow Maverick as he mentors a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.

Filming for the sequel has finally begun last week in San Diego, with Joseph Kosinski taking over directing duty from the late Tony Scott, who had been circling the project prior to his death in 2012.

The sequel is slated for release in North American cinemas on 12 July 2019.
