Under Armour ambassador Allan Wu invites you to join him on a run at UA's All Out Mile
Striking a balance in life may be as simple as carving out time regularly to indulge in an activity of your choice. Yahoo Shopping chats with personalities who share their passion for a sport or wellness activity they enjoy which helps them take on the world with zeal. We hope this monthly series will inspire you to find an interest that will add that sparkle to your life.
Allan Wu is probably best known as the host for three seasons of the Emmy award-winning “The Amazing Race” franchise. While he found his start in the entertainment industry, health and fitness have always been his greatest passions, and he enjoys sharing his knowledge. He hopes to achieve that as an ambassador for Under Armour and participate in the upcoming AOM (All Out Mile) event in early June.
It has been ages since I last even attempted to run a mile “all out,” but I am looking forward to the challenge.Under Armour ambassador Allan Wu
Yahoo Shopping: What is one sport, fitness or wellness activity you love, and how did you get started?
Since I was young, I have always enjoyed being active and playing all kinds of sports. I was on the varsity cross country, football, and track team back in high school. I also participated in road cycling races and beach volleyball tournaments. I was on the crew (rowing) and rugby teams at university. Yet if you asked me to choose only one sport, I would have to say it all goes back to running. It is one of the easiest and most effective exercises to do and has kept me in shape for decades. As I have gotten older, I don't run that hard or fast anymore, so I am looking forward to seeing how fast (or how slow) I am now as I train for the AOM.
What are its benefits of running, and what do you love about it?
When anyone asks me how I stay in shape after all this time, I always tell them that running has been the foundation of my exercise regimen. You don’t need a gym. You don’t need anyone else. All you need is a pair of good quality running shoes. Running has been great for my mind, body, and soul, and I always feel so good after completing a run. I can do it anytime and anywhere. Furthermore, it's allowed me to eat and drink whatever I want until now. I dare say I still look and feel healthy and fit.
How often do you indulge in it, and with whom?
Unfortunately, I don't run as much as I would like. However, I still try to run at least two times per week for at least half an hour by myself. Everyone is usually busy, so I enjoy just going out for a run by myself.
Was there any point you wanted to give up? Why? How did you bounce back?
There have been times when I did consider giving up running regularly due to knee issues. However, I always tell myself that there is no better exercise to stay fit and healthy, so I have persevered. I don't run as much now and have been substituting other runs with different activities such as swimming.
What gears do you wear when engaging in the sport?
I like to wear light, breathable materials with a comfortable cut and design from Under Armour. I have been wearing their sport-specific designs for many years, and I have always enjoyed the way they look and feel. I also wear their state-of-the-art running shoes to protect my knees and joints as I continue to pound the pavement. In addition to clothing and shoes, I also like to work out with my Apple Watch to keep track of my progress. In addition, I blast music on my Apple Air Pods to keep me motivated. Finally, on bright and sunny days, I’ll be sure to wear Oakley sunglasses to protect my eyes while having an optimal vision.
Share with us one thing you learnt from this sport and what you wish others to discover about it.
I have learned that there is bound to be something out there for everyone with all the various sports and exercises available these days. I have been fortunate that I have always enjoyed playing sports. It has become resoundingly clear that "Health is Wealth". It is only with good health that we can get the most out of life, not just for ourselves but for our family.
As a well-known figure, what is one way you inject positivity into the public?
I try my best to stay motivated and in shape so people can draw inspiration and want to get in better shape themselves. Of course, they may not be on the cover of "Men's Health" or have a six-pack. But as long as they can lead a healthier and happier life via sports, that already makes me feel like I have done something meaningful and worthwhile.
