New in town: Wanglee Cafe — Nanyang kopitiam-style favourites at new TPY eatery

With delicious eats aplenty, Toa Payoh is often regarded as one of the best foodie neighbourhoods. I mean it, though; it earned itself a spot among the top food neighbourhoods of Singapore in our recent poll.

Still, there’s no such thing as too many great food options. Enter the latest addition to Toa Payoh’s stacked line-up: Wanglee Cafe, a Nanyang kopitiam-style eatery that serves up familiar favourites.

You can find this new kid on the block at Toa Payoh Lorong 4, situated just a few doors down from several well-known establishments such as Kim Keat Hokkien Mee and Happiness Nonya Cakes & Confectionery.

While the eatery is a fresh face, it’s helmed by a pretty seasoned team. It was conceptualised by the folks behind Yu Huang Premium Seafood Soup, a Taman Jurong seafood soup stall that shuttered in Apr.

Wanglee Cafe officially swung open its doors to the public on 2 Jun 2024. It seems that their first few days of operations were not without hiccups, though, as they’re still getting into the groove of things. Nonetheless, they’ve expressed determination to do better based on customers’ feedback and support.

You can expect to see a streamlined menu of familiar favourites that you can find in a Nanyang kopitiam. In the words of Wanglee Cafe, they specialise in traditional Singaporean and Malaysian classics that’ll remind you of grandma’s house.

Start your morning right with the quintessential Singaporean breakfast of Kaya Butter Toast (S$2.80), or have it in a Set (S$5.20) with half-boiled eggs and a cup of kopi. For something heartier, opt for the Century Egg Minced Meat Porridge (S$3.80) or an Economic Bee Hoon Set (S$3.80), which includes luncheon meat, vegetables and a sunny-side-up egg.

As a handmade noodle fanatic, I have my eye on the Soup/Dry Mee Hoon Kuey (S$5.80) and the Chilli Pan Mee (S$6.80). According to the biz, these dishes are also the most popular.

Considering Wanglee Cafe’s proximity to our office, I already have half a mind to swing by for a satisfying local food fix soon; perhaps you’d like to as well!
