New in town: Teppanyaki sets from $6 per pax with sambal & mentaiko sauce at Hougang

How often do you see teppanyaki (Japanese metal hotplate grilling/frying) hawkers? Probably not a lot, but there’s now a new addition to the scene with the arrival of Teppan Secret in Hougang.

The “Secret” comes from the chef’s teppanyaki sauce recipes, for which the ingredients and preparation are secret and perfected over his more than 20 years of experience. Teppan Secret serves four sauce choices, Black Pepper, Teriyaki, Mentaiko and, for a local twist, Sambal.

Don’t worry, that title isn’t clickbait – you can get a meal for as low as S$6+ per pax! That’s because the stall offers Feast Sets that can be shared among 2 or 3 people. Their Ninja’s Set is the cheapest at S$18 and consists of sliced beef, chicken and dory.

The Samurai’s Set (S$22) and Shogun’s Set (S$28) are highly recommended. While the Samurai’s Set comes with either chicken or pork, the Shogun’s offers beef, and both contain dory, king prawns and squid.

They also serve individual sets, the best sellers being Teppan Chicken Drum Boneless (S$8) and Teppan Slice Beef (S$9). If you don’t mind forking out a little more cash, you could go for the Teppan Aus Tenderloin (180g) (S$16) or Teppan Atlantic Salmon Fillet (S$12).

Every set comes with broccoli, bean sprouts, corn, rice and miso soup. Choose your main before selecting a sauce from the four options.

Due to limited space in the coffeeshop setting, Teppan Secret cannot set up a hotplate cooking station in the customer seating area. Hence, they will live-stream the frying and grilling process via their stall’s television as well as social media streaming platforms like YouTube once the Wi-Fi is installed.

To ensure that food is served at the right temperature, Teppan Secret provides customers with a portable teppanyaki plate complete with a burner. The rice and soups are kept warm at all times and only taken off the heat for serving when the orders are complete.

Has this convinced you to give Teppan Secret a go yet?
