New in town: Old Hokkien — Wide variety of BKT & zi char dishes from $1.50 in Yishun by Old World Bak Kut Teh

The ‘notorious’ neighbourhood of Yishun is home to many foodie gems. Old World Bak Kut Teh was one such gem but this resident of our ‘best bak kut teh in Singapore’ listicle pulled down the shutters of their popular 285 Yishun stall on 26 May.

Fortunately, the saying “a window opens when a door closes” has never been more resonant. The popular stall has not only relocated within the neighbourhood but also rebranded itself to Old Hokkien, a bak kut teh and zi char concept.

Old Hokkien - Stallfront

Old Hokkien opened in the Kimly Coffeeshop at 101 Yishun Ave 5 just last week on 2 Jun. According to a Facebook comment, this marks the establishment’s fourth relocation within Yishun. We’re glad they’re thriving.

Labelling Old Hokkien’s menu as simply ‘extensive’ would be an understatement. Expect a plethora of zi char dishes, Pig’s Organ Soup (S$4.50) and, of course, Old World’s titular bak kut teh. Yes, it’s here to stay.

Despite its name, Old Hokkien offers both the herbal Hokkien and peppery Teochew versions of bak kut teh. The most basic bowl of Pork Ribs Soup (S$6) is of the latter variant, and features tender pork ribs in a garlicky, peppery broth.

Pair it with Plain Rice (S$0.70) or Dry/Soup Noodles (S$1.50). Don’t forget a side of crispy fried You Tiao (S$1) to dunk in the soup!

On the other hand, the Old Hokkien Herbal Bak Kut Teh Soup stars a medley of pig trotters and pork chunks in a soulful herbal broth. A single portion is priced at S$8.80, while an order for 2-3 pax comes in at S$16.80.

Looking to try something new? Give the Old Hokkien Herbal Bak Kut Teh Hotpot (S$16.80) a whirl! You’ll get a variety of ingredients like pork bellypork balls, enoki mushrooms and even squidprawns and fish for you to cook in a bubbling claypot of the hearty herbal broth.

If you’ve never had a bowl of wok hei-rich fried porridge, there is no better place to have your first. Old Hokkien offers a line-up of 5 types, including their most popular Fried Large Intestines Fried Porridge (S$7)Mixed Pig’s Organ Fried Porridge (S$6) and Sliced Pork Fried Porridge (S$4).

Believe it or not, I’m not even finished yet! If you’re cash-strapped, the stall offers 2 of value meals: Egg Fried Rice (S$3) and Pork Lard Rice (S$1.50). Both are simple yet delicious creations.

And finally, we have the zi char section, where you’ll find popular dishes in heaped portions. Craving something classic? Get the dark sauce-laden KL Tai Lok Mee (S$8) or a comforting Old School Hor Fun with Egg Gravy (S$8). If you are one of those who enjoy heavier flavours (like me), the Cheese Seafood Bee Hoon (S$9.80) will be right up your alley.
