New stall at Holland Drive Market with old-school wet-style HKM

This is a good time to be a Hokkien mee lover – with a slew of good stalls opening up or gaining traction of late, another one joins the fray. The Four-Eyes Zai Fried Hokkien Mee (四眼仔 古早味 炒福建面), a stall that opened at the end of November in Holland Drive Market, is one of the latest stalls helmed by the younger generation offering their take on fried Hokkien mee.

Available in 3 portion sizes, the Fried Hokkien Mee starts from S$6 for a small, medium at S$8, and large at S$10. You can also call ahead at +65 9114 5885 for takeaway or pre-orders.

The Fried Hokkien Mee served here is of the wetter variety, and most notably uses the thicker bee hoon instead of the thin type. Hokkien mee aficionados are very particular about the thickness of the bee hoon used, but I myself prefer thicker bee hoon

The Hokkien mee is described as having decent wok hei with a flavourful and umami-filled broth, and the quality and quantity of ingredients (squid, prawns and pork belly) are good. The pork lard is also freshly prepared – a key feature in a good Hokkien mee, one might say.

Some netizens have also noted that the S$6 portion is served on a disposable Styrofoam plate and have expressed displeasure over it, while the larger portions are served on proper tableware.

If you’re interested to try out this Hokkien mee, note that The Four-Eyes Zai Fried Hokkien Mee is only open for less than 4 hours each day from 5pm to 8.30pm, with the exception of Sundays, where they are open from 9am to 2pm
