New in town: Nong Geng Ji — Largest Hunan restaurant chain with authentic spicy dishes opens 1st SG outlet
We all love a good spicy feast now and then, so how about one straight from one of China‘s spiciest regions? Nong Geng Ji, a renowned Hunan restaurant chain with over 100 stores in China, opened its first outlet in Singapore on 21 Oct.
Situated at Collyer Quay, the restaurant is a short walk from Raffles Place MRT station.
Take the first bite out of Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli (S$27.90), served in a wok with a burner so it stays warm. This dish is an amped-up take on Hunan’s popular stir-fried pork with plump baby abalones thrown into the mix. Plenty of Hunan green peppers are tossed with pork leg and chillis over an intense flame to bring out a spicy kick.
Any feast at Nong Geng Ji is incomplete without rice. Wuchang Steamed Rice with Sweet Potato and Red Dates (S$7.90) is a signature dish not found at any other Hunan restaurant. The fluffy grains take on a subtle sweetness and fragrance, making for a good balance against the stronger flavours of other dishes.
For something less spicy, try the most well-received dish in Beijing — Stir-fried Beef with Fried Chilli (S$28.90). It’s made of specially imported Hunan dried peppers that have been dehydrated and stir-fried with sliced beef to produce a piquant fragrance.
The Signature Grass Fish Fillet with Chilli (S$25.90) is another popular Nong Geng Ji creation. Slices of filleted fish are gently cooked in pickled chilli sauce, boasting a uniquely chewy texture. A non-spicy version is also available for kids to enjoy.
Pan-Seared Green Chillies with Century Egg (S$11.90) comes in a mortar filled with green chillies, century egg and garlic. Pound the ingredients well to extract their aromas before digging in for maximal flavour.
Hengyang Stewed Vegetables (S$15.90) offers a taste of Hunan province’s second largest city. Beef tripe, pig’s ears and peanuts come together harmoniously for a wonderful mix of textures with an umami note.
If your palate’s been oversaturated by the savoury, spicy mains, take a breather with Nong Geng Ji’s snacks like Glutinous Rice cake with Brown Sugar (S$3.90) or Deep-fried Glutinous Rice fritters (S$4.90). The gentle sweet tones should leave your taste buds reinvigorated.
If the spice is getting to you, seek refuge in their Signature Lemon Tea (S$3.90). A whole litre of the refreshing beverage should be more than enough to douse the occasional flame spurt.
Nong Geng Ji is offering huge discounts on the following dates to celebrate their grand opening:
21 – 23 Oct: 50% off
24 – 26 Oct: 40% off
27, 28 and 30 Oct: 30% off
