Titiwangsa Wang Kopitiam: 50-year-old breakfast spot hidden in the woods with curry mee & zha jiang noodles

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of ‘KL’? Cafes, shopping malls, or atas restaurants, perhaps? However, KL offers more than just that. Beyond the glitz, it also presents a wide range of experiences, like a neighbourhood coffee shop serving breakfast dish that’s hidden from the bustling heart of the city. Tucked away in a nook of a neighbourhood, there’s a coffee shop named Titiwangsa Wang Kopitiam. It’s located at Jalan Maran, Titiwangsa, and offers an array of local breakfast dishes.

I was greeted by lush greenery upon entering the coffee shop. Surrounded by trees, the stall exhibited a serene atmosphere. Once I settled in, an auntie greeted me warmly. Based on her suggestions, the must-try items at the stall include zha jiang noodles, curry noodles, tofu pok, fried dumplings, and pepper & salt chicken chop.

What I tried at Titiwangsa Wang Kopitiam

I opted for a plate of Zha Jiang Noodles (RM8) to kickstart my morning. My attention was drawn to the luscious minced meat sauce. The texture of the sauce looked dense, with some pork lard and chillis on top. It immediately whetted my appetite.

The noodles boasted a delightfully springy texture, contributing to a gratifying chewy bite that enhanced the overall dining experience. It also skillfully absorbed the sauce, though I had to stir it to ensure an even coating throughout.

The noodles also came with a small bowl of soup containing wanton. The soup was light and fulfilling, making it a perfect match for the noodles. The wanton also displayed a generous amount of ingredients in it.

Next, I indulged in the signature tofu pok. Initially, I hesitated to order this dish as the picture on the menu presented a generous portion, and I think it’s quite heavy for breakfast. The auntie, reading my mind, came over and informed me about the à la carte option for the Tofu Pok (RM2.20/piece). To avoid wasting food, I decided to order just one piece.

As shown in the picture above, the tofu pok was filled with ample ingredients. According to the menu, the tofu pok is in Guang Xi style. The factor that sets this dish apart from the ones we usually have is the inclusion of chives. The chives perfectly infuse the minced meat while the beancurd skin flawlessly soaks up the soup.

I also ordered an Iced Hainam Tea (RM3.80) to wash down my meal. The drink is a mixture of coffee and tea. I noticed that the tea flavour was more pronounced, with a subtle coffee-like aftertaste. The creaminess did not quite meet my expectations, but it was still a decent drink to have.

Final thoughts

This coffee shop seems to be well-liked by the locals. Throughout my meal time, I saw a lot of uncles and aunties coming in groups after their morning exercise. It appeared to be their regular hangout spot. The scene exhibited a human touch that evoked my childhood memories— following my grandmother to have breakfast in a pasar pagi.

Overall, I think this is a great spot for breakfast, as you can get a decent breakfast in KL at an affordable price. The ambience of the stall is also a plus point. Will I come back again? Definitely, yes. My dining experience from this time has ignited my interest in trying out other signature dishes. I can’t wait to plan for my next trip to Titiwangsa Wang Kopitiam!

Remember to bring some cash along, as they only accept cash payments.

Expected damage: RM7 – RM15 per pax
