Striking lantern displays & over 15 food stalls at Lights by the Lake 2023

As the Mid-Autumn Festival swings around, many are looking to celebrate the momentous event with friends and family. Lights by the Lake 2023 at Jurong Lake Gardens has just the atmosphere to make the trip worth your while. Running from 16 Sep to 1 Oct, these 2 weeks of festivities have transformed the park’s verdant patches into a gorgeous spectacle of lantern displays.

Vibrant, dynamic displays line the spacious footpaths, masterfully hand-crafted to achieve the beautiful details that perfectly stand out against the night. One zone portrays Singapore’s growth over the years, and it evoked a deep sense of nostalgia in me as I paced through the scenes captured flawlessly in mesmerising colours.

Another features the various captivating ecologies and habitats of the animal kingdom, from frigid tundra to the sweltering savannah.

As you soak in the atmosphere at Lights by the Lake 2023, don’t let those hunger pangs go unfulfilled. An enormous tent housing the appropriately named ‘Food Street’ has all manner of street food that will give your cravings a swift end.

Allow Kung Fu Sotong to do the honours. Their Skewered Sotongs (S$6) are grilled to order, and the smoke show from the griddle is almost as captivating as the light display.

Treat yourself to the Moo Bing (3 for S$5) marinated in different sauces at Siam Thailand Food, or have a proper taste of Thailand’s traditional cuisine with Tom Yam Soup Seafood/Chicken + Rice/Noodle (S$7) or Thai Seafood Fried Rice (S$6).

Kebab is a mainstay at these pasar malam-style events. Yummilicious Kebab‘s choices of chicken or beef are at an affordable S$5 for 1 and S$9 for 2. Who can resist the smell of meat wafting from the rotisserie? Not me.

Much like kebabs, takoyaki also makes a frequent appearance. Gemok’s Takoyaki has the less interesting Original Takoyaki at S$4 for 6 pcs, but why stick to convention when upgrading to Cheesy Takoyaki (S$4 for 6 pcs) costs the same? If you demand more exoticism from Takoyaki, their Chilli Crab sauce (S$5 for 6pcs) should be new territory enough.

Drop by to check out the rest of the stalls, including Ramly burgers, Durian Takoyaki, Thai Milk Tea, Stinky Tofu, traditional Oyster puffs, and even games for the young ‘uns. A separate dining section is available for diners who need to give their sore legs a rest. The food street runs from 7pm to 11pm.
