Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Appoints Virtual Reality Point Person As VR Becomes The New Art Form

Jake Zim has just been named senior VP of virtual reality by Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman, tasked with “building a slate of narrative VR content” for the film group. He will work closely with Kuni Suzuki, EVP for Strategic Corporate Initiatives at Sony Entertainment and a team of professionals from across Sony Pictures who are dedicated to the production and distribution of virtual reality (VR).

Sony’s move into VR comes after Google and Imax Corp. announced plans to develop a cinema-grade VR camera and as others in this space are marching forward in preparation of virtual reality projects in the next wave of consumer entertainment.

In fact, Digital Domain recently formed an alliance with Warner Music to jointly produce the first VR concert in China; The International Cinematographers Guild is working to help its DPs understand how to light, block and compose shots for this new visual art form. And last week, the filmmakers behind JeruZalem said they, too, will use a VR component in the sequel of the horror film. Other companies are also getting into the act as well.

“Sony is in a unique position to shape the VR landscape with its assets in entertainment, gaming and technology,” said Rothman. “Jake has the background and expertise to help us develop innovative narrative content in this exciting new medium.”

Previously, as Senior VP, Digital Marketing, Zim oversaw promotional VR initiatives for the studio, including the recently announced collaboration between Sony Pictures and The Void to create Ghostbusters: Dimension, a fully immersive VR experience at Madame Tussauds New York.
