Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle: 40-min queues for hawker’s hefty mee pok in AMK

We are all for fantastic food spots that have been kept away from the public eye, especially on social media. So, when fishball noodle stall Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle in Ang Mo Kio can get 40-minute queues without much publicity, it definitely invites some curiosity.

Some folks have even proclaimed this hawker stall has the best (yes, really) fishball noodles in Singapore. Long queues for this stall are common but many have said that the wait is worth the while. Very intrigued, I headed down to find out whether the hype was worth it.

Having heard that the fishballs often sell out by 11am, I arrived early to not miss out. And to my disbelief, the queue was truly no joke! Even on a weekday morning, there were already 13 eager people in line. The line grew longer behind me, possibly becoming the longest queue in this hawker centre.

I only got to order after a solid 40 minutes of waiting, which may not be feasible for customers who are in a hurry.

Auntie showed that this was not her first rodeo handling the crowd, with swift hands and impeccably quick customer service. Yet, it didn’t stop her from giving a smile to every customer. Another sweet note was that she took orders from the elderly who had trouble standing in the queue, which was incredibly thoughtful.

Her partner, who was another speedy worker, boiled and prepped bowl after bowl of orders. Just a glance at the gleeful customers taking away their hefty bowls of noodles made me drool in anticipation.

What I tried at Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle

At first glance, I easily concluded that this had to be one of the largest portions I have received. For a classic order of Dry Mee Pok, this satisfied the Singaporean soul in me as it only cost S$4. Talk about a mighty steal!

Having seen the online comments raving about their chunky pork lard, I was disappointed to not see any. Considering those reviews were posted half a year ago, a wise deduction would be that they have since removed it.

A good stir is required to mix up all that goodness of chilli and vinegar beneath the behemoth that is the mass of noodles. Within the first bite, I knew instantly this was the real deal. Usually, it is common that either the vinegar or chilli overpowers the other. This wasn’t the case for Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle, which had both elements completely in balance with each other.

You get a perfect hint of acidity and a touch of numbing heat in each mouthful, which is very addictive. Even I (who completely cannot take spice) enjoyed the bowl of mee pok with enthusiasm.

Clearly, the role of the star of the show was snatched by the noodles. I adored its texture as it was the perfect epitome of QQ. Being ultra chewy, the noodles gave a great bite which reminded me of a harder version of mee hoon kueh.

Not just the serving of noodles was gigantic, even the fishcakes were! Close to almost a full finger in length, they definitely needed a few bites to eat. Taste-wise, it was the classic taste — not too much out of the ordinary.

Of course, my curiosity about the fishballs remained. Was Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle’s truly so good that they could sell out by just 11am? In my opinion, yes. I loved how they were bouncier than the average ones, with a nice spring in their step (or bounce?). Considering how many people ordered Fishball Soup (S$4), there are certainly lots of fans for it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the massive amount of minced pork, which is freshly boiled per order. Fresh porky flavour mixes with each bite of noodle, giving a nice piece of protein every time. Very indulgent, indeed.

Fishball Soup

What I loved most had to be Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle’s soup. It is clear to see why their soup is so popular. Unlike the usual MSG-packed ones, this broth had a light sweetness infused with pork flavour. It made for a fantastic way to cool down the spice in the noodles, washing away the oily taste. I was disappointed to the core when I drank my last spoonful.

With this visit, I have truly gotten why people have been praising Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle high and low. Although I can’t see myself waking up early and travelling all the way for it, I can definitely see myself having a bowl if cravings hit whilst I’m in the area.

However, for my mouth’s sake, I may just get the soup variety. Unfortunately for me, my tongue burned all the way home. Spice really is not my forte.

Expected damage: S$4 – S$5 per pax
