We need this: “Singin’ in the Rain” is coming back to theaters this weekend
This is just the kind of news we needed to get over the mid-week hump. Singin’ in the Rain is coming back to theaters this weekend and we are buying our tickets ASAP. Entertainment Weekly reports that the classic Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly film will screen in theaters nationwide on Sunday, January 15th and Wednesday, January 18th in celebration of the film’s 65th anniversary.
Sadly ironic — the re-release of Singin’ in the Rain was planned well before Reynolds’ unexpected death last month. But now Reynolds fans can agree that the re-release is more poignant now than ever.
In the 1952 film musical, Reynolds plays a young and impressionable Kathy Selden, an actress working during Hollywood’s transition from silent films to talkies. Not only was Singin’ in the Rain 18-year-old Reynolds’ film debut, but it was also where she learned how to dance. And she was taught by one of the best movers and shakers in the business: Gene Kelly.
The film is being presented as part of TCM’s Big Screen Classics series, an event that is bringing a myriad of classic films back into theaters this year. Singin’ in theRain is the first film in Turner Classic Movies’ event that is being brought back into theaters. The line-up also consists of Casablanca, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, The Godfather, and The Princess Bride to name a few.
Fans can check out Fandango to find local theaters that have scheduled showings Singin’ in the Rain. As much as it is a celebration of the film’s 65th anniversary, the re-release is also a final farewell to a wonderful actress who will be sorely missed.
