Singapore’s original soya sauce chicken, Lee Fun Nam Kee, closes 13 Sep
It’s not often that tragedy strikes the food scene in Singapore, much less of this magnitude. Distinguished soya sauce chicken seller Lee Fun Nam Kee at Toa Payoh will close their doors permanently on 13 Sep.
The grim news was announced on Instagram by Genevieve Lee, daughter of the restaurant’s current owner, notably a finalist in Masterchef Singapore’s first season. The post states that ‘After careful consideration, numerous family discussions, and evaluating various factors, we’ve come to acknowledge that it’s time to bid farewell to this chapter.’
While the origin of soya sauce chicken in Singapore has been hotly debated for decades, Lee Fun Nam Kee proclaims itself as the first original brand adapted for local palates since 1968.
Their full menu will be available up until the last day of operations so every patron can have a shot at whatever takes their fancy. Other dishes of renown are their Special Roast Duck (S$30 for half, S$60 for whole) and Famous Crispy Roast Pork (S$12 for small, S$21 for medium, S$32 for large).
You’ll want to prepare yourselves for long queues as other diners will be looking to have their swansong meals at the open-air restaurant space as well.
The Instagram post does end with an optimistic note – hinting at future endeavours “through a fresh and new concept”. Given their family’s track record in the culinary world, we might not have to wait long for them to take Singapore’s culinary world by storm, again.
Do note Lee Fun Nam Kee will be closed on 1 Sep for Polling Day.
