The Strictly Judge shared the experience on Instagram with a video of her travelling to the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda to complete a 500m zip wire. The video followed her as she travelled through the air at a breathtaking 120 miles per hour.

For Shirley, an ambassador for CALM, this was the first part of a Skyathlon challenge in which she will also complete a wing walk 700ft above the ground and a 13,000ft skydive.

The dancing legend decided to undertake the challenge, raising money for the mental health charity, in memory of her brother David who sadly took his own life 20 years ago. She honoured him in the video caption: "I did it. ❤️ For all the loved ones we’ve lost. Thank you big brother David for carrying me today. Xxx"

Shirley spoke about her challenge on BBC Breakfast on Monday, saying: "If I am honest, I am quite terrified. About 20 years ago, my brother took his own life and it was tragic. My mother and I didn't realise that was what was going to happen. It is affecting more people than we realise and I wouldn't want anyone to experience what my mum and I have experienced through losing someone to suicide. It has no face, and it can happen to anybody at any age."

Tearfully, she said "I’m doing it for everybody out there who’s got somebody living miserably or somebody that has taken their own life… I’m getting all emotional. I’m doing this for all of you."
