SINGAPORE — Shihlin Singapore Market will return for its second run in 2020, but it will be held “online” due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival will go live over two weekends in June: 12-14 June, and 19-21 June. A press release by Shihlin Singapore today (13 April) said, “Expect a full sensorial experience with your loved ones from the comfort of your couch. The festival combines food, shopping and entertainment under one platform — from amazing live stream performances to mouth-watering foodie favourites cooked in front of your eyes and delivered straight to your doorstep.”

Shihlin Singapore was inspired by the famous Taiwanese night market of the same name. It is organised by events company Invade, which is also behind the annual Artbox Singapore market.

According to organisers, Shihlin Singapore 2020 will be “Singapore’s first and largest digital festival”.

“With the closure of retail stores and entertainment venues and no foot traffic to sustain F&B businesses, we thought it was necessary to become the platform that would help these operators to survive,” said Kent Teo, CEO and founder of Invade. “It’s a trying time for everyone in Singapore. Not only do we want to remind the general public that we can still find joy amid hardship, even while at home, we also want to assist our community of businesses to still thrive under such circumstances.”

Singapore has so far confirmed more than 2,500 cases infected with the coronavirus, and eight deaths from the COVID-19 disease. The government has implemented social distancing measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including the shutdown of non-essential businesses and banning private and public gatherings.

Potential vendors who would like to register their interest in participating in Shihlin Singapore should visit its website, which is slated to go live on 13 April 2020.
