Shan Cheng unveils helicopter rice & pastries with 106 years of heritage
Founded in 2011 by sisters Elaine and Cheryl Tioh, both of whom missed the dishes of their hometown Ipoh, Shan Cheng has been showcasing the region’s culinary heritage to Singaporeans.
The dishes are based on the recipes of the sisters’ mother, with ingredients sourced directly from Ipoh. The brand has recently debuted a new menu item and joined forcers with a very special collaborator.
Their signature Shredded Chicken Hor Fun (S$8.40) is a much-beloved dish, even breaking the Singapore Book of Records for the “Largest Number of Ipoh hor fun sold”, with over 1.1 million bowls sold since its introduction. The dish features the iconic rice noodles in a light and slightly sweet broth with fresh prawns and tender chicken pieces. It’s easy to see why so many were sold!
Another item to try would be the Ipoh Golden Platter (S$8.50 for small, S$13.90 for large), which features a variety of items fried to crisp golden perfection. Look forward to bouncy fishballs and fish cakes, crispy beancurd skin and a turnip cake. Pair it with their house-made chilli to further excite your tastebuds. This makes the perfect accompaniment to their hor fun.
In continuing their dedication to preserving Ipoh’s culinary heritage, Shan Cheng has unveiled their newest signature item: Helicopter Nasi Kandar (S$10.80). Due to the addictive quality of this dish, it’s lovingly known as “Nasi Ganja” among locals in Ipoh. It also gained international fame during the pandemic when a tycoon from Kuala Lumpur hired a helicopter pick-up just to be able to satisfy their craving for the dish.
Shan Cheng’s rendition features fragrant rice and tender chicken, all doused in an aromatic curry that is a blend of fish, chicken and masak merah (a traditional Malay red curry). It’s fiery and incredibly flavourful – if you enjoy spice, this is for you!
Shan Cheng has also partnered with Ipoh’s oldest biscuit shop, Guan Heong. Founded in 1918, Guan Heong has delighted many generations of loyal customers, and Singaporeans now get to savour 5 of their best-sellers: Meat Floss with Lotus Paste Biscuit (S$13.80 for 9pcs), Traditional Salted Tau Sar Pheah (S$3.90 for 5pcs), Phoenix Egg Roll With Seaweed and Meat Floss (S$8.80), Low-Sugar Sachima (S$5.80) and Heong Peah (S$6.80). These will be available at all Shan Cheng outlets.
