Earning airline miles in more ways than flying is possible with a couple of new shopping portal promotions.

American Airlines is running a “Winter Deals” promotion through its AAdvantage shopping portal, offering up to 1,000 bonus miles for eligible purchases. To qualify, members must log in with their frequent flier credentials and spend $200 with participating retailers by Sunday, Jan. 12, at 11:59 p.m. ET to earn 500 bonus miles or $500 to earn 1,000 bonus miles.

Similarly, United Airlines’ MileagePlus shopping portal is offering a New Year’s bonus deal until Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Members can earn 500 bonus points by spending $150 or 1,000 points by spending $300 or more.

These shopping portals feature hundreds of popular retailers, such as Home Depot, Lululemon, and Petsmart. All of these stores offer their own bonuses, which frequently change, with the limited-time promotional miles added on top. For example, American Airlines is currently offering 4x miles at Lululemon, so a $500 purchase through Lululemon would earn a total of 3,000 miles, combining the promotion and the retailer’s bonus miles.

While both portals advise that miles may take up to 10 weeks after the bonus period to appear in your account, in practice, these bonuses typically post within a few days.

Using a shopping portal is an excellent way to quickly earn a few thousand miles for your next free flight. Plus, paying for the purchase with a rewards credit card like the Capital One Venture X card will earn an additional 2x miles on all purchases, bringing home even more value.

Both United and American offer bargain deals with miles on domestic airfare, costing as low as 5,000 miles one-way. Other major airlines have their own shopping portals, too, including Delta SkyMiles Shopping, United Mileage Plus Shopping, JetBlue TrueBlue Shopping, and more, and will offer rotating promotions throughout the year to earn even more miles.
