Royal Secret Agent episodes 9-10: Kim Myung Soo provides fan service, cross-dresses to show off gentler side
By Bryan Tan
This recap, which contains minor spoilers, covers episodes 9-10 of Royal Secret Agent, which is currently available on iQiyi.
The latest episodes follow our gutsy secret royal agent Song Yi Gyeom (Kim Myung Soo) in his mission to weed out corruption from among the officials of the Jeolla province. He captures Kim Dae Gwang (Kim Yoon Bae), the son of the richest man in one of the towns, Lord Kim (Jung Doo Kyum), found lurking around the house of the herbalist who was violently murdered.
Yi Gyeom is forced to recalibrate his approach from the lack of evidence, and releases the suspicious youth. Another masked intruder forces his way into a room where Hong Da In (Kwon Na Ra) sleeps, and Yi Gyeom stays up all night to protect her. I can totally feel the ship coming as Da In’s heart sways from all of Yi Gyeom’s gentlemanly moves!
Yi Gyeom’s younger brother Yi Beom (Lee Tae Hwan) tries to live a clean life as a wandering traveller with Kang Sun Ae (Jo Soo Min), Yi Gyeom’s past lover, but gets accosted by patrolmen who have seen his wanted poster. Sun Ae is later attacked when Yi Beom leaves to run an errand, and is kidnapped.
Yi Gyeom sends Park Chun Sam (Lee Yi Kyung) to trail Kim Dae Gwang to a mask shop, and finds out that Dae Gwang and his rich friends have been arranging secret masked banquets and consuming opium poppy flowers.
Yi Gyeom and co. decide to infiltrate the secret banquet to find out what’s what and in a hilarious scene, cross dress as courtesans.
The Royal Secret Courtesan…?
Chaos ensues when they enter the banquet dressed as women and the men can’t get their hands off them! Chun Sam adopts a high pitched squeak to fool the men, who apparently find that strong, muscular women are rather attractive. Yi Kyung has stolen the show so far in his supporting role, and his antics really crack me up!
Yi Gyeom sneaks off and uncovers crucial details in his investigation, but loses his head completely when the kidnapped Sun Ae is presented as the highlight of the debauched banquet. He announces his presence as royal agent and rounds up all the perpetrators with the help of Yi Beom, who shows up hot on Sun Ae’s trail.
The perpetrators are tortured and interrogated in the magistrate’s courtyard, when the body of Kim Dae Gwang, the supposed leader of the group, was found and his suicide confirmed. Da In examines the body and is suspicious of how the death occurred.
In a stunning turn of events, the magistrate’s treachery was admitted by his fellow comrades to Chun Sam, who uses a mask to conceal his identity and coaxes the truth out of them. The magistrate manages to incapacitate Yi Gyeom and hold him hostage, but he manages to escape, thanks to a terribly shot arrow by Da In which distracted everyone.
With another villain down and out for the count, the trio move on to confront the governor of Jeolla province, who suffers from an unsightly disease which looks like a cross between measles and severe eczema.
You can feel that Kim Myung Soo has grown tremendously into his role; playfully comedic in one scene and dramatically commanding in another, both effortlessly convincing. Notwithstanding the great chemistry with the other two supporting leads, he has shown viewers that he is not just another pretty-faced idol-turned-actor, but a genuine talent to be reckoned with.
