A round-up of hawker stalls that closed permanently in 2024
What a year 2024 has been— amid plenty of flourishing businesses in the Food & Beverage industry, we unfortunately also had to bid farewell to many beloved hawker stalls and businesses. Reasons for these closures include retirement, health problems and rising rental costs— it appears that regardless of the year, these factors will always continue to plague our local F&B owners.
Here is a round-up of a few of the hawker stalls that shuttered their doors for the last time in 2024.
January
The Green Bean Shop — The stall, known for its S$1 nasi lemak, shut on 31 Jan due to high cost of manpower and difficulties from limitations set by MOM’s quota.
Swatow Bai Le Braised Duck — The outlet at Geylang shuttered on 15 Jan, though their only other store at Lau Pa Sat remains open.
February
Kin Men Seng Heng — Singapore’s first halal braised duck stall closed on 8 Feb, though it was labelled as a hiatus, leaving a possibility of an eventual return.
Penang Taste — The Sultan Plaza stall shuttered on 15 Feb after one of the owners, Cindy, got badly scalded on 31 Jan while cooking a batch of soup. She headed back to Penang to seek treatment.
Hei Bai Chao — The Grantral Mall stall, which sold san lou bee hoon, KL dai lok mee and crispy pork knuckle, silently shuttered.
March
Xi Le Ting — The old-school dessert stall shut after the elderly stall owner decided to retire after 50 years.
The Coco Rice — The halal-certified nasi lemak stall shut both its outlets in Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre and One Punggol Hawker Centre in late Mar.
Bee Kee Hong Kong Thiam Sim — This 42-year-old dim sum stall in Bedok closed as the owner’s health was declining and he could not find a successor.
Seng Kee — The fishball noodle stall in Albert Centre shut on 20 Mar as the owner decided to pursue retirement.
Lucky Lucky Catering & Restaurant — The family-run business ceased operations on 22 Mar, with the owners explaining that the “rising rental rates and expenses” had made it difficult for the business to continue operating at its current location.
April
Cuppage Fried Guo Tiao — The old-school char kway teow stall pulled down its shutters on 5 Apr as its owners decided to bow out of the hawker scene.
Soon Heng Pork Noodles — The stall closed on 27 Apr, though no official reason was provided.
Shi Wei Da Satay Bee Hoon — Afte 30 years, the Bedok 85 Fengshan Food Centre stall was sold.
Just Pasta — The pasta stall within Hong Lim Hawker Centre, which had bacon carbonara, prawn aglio olio & roasted wings from S$3.90, shut on 30 Apr.
May
Minced Mixed Noodle — This soupy bak chor mee stall in Old Airport Road Food Centre shut on 26 May, ahead of the food centre’s renovation works in June.
Leong Yeow Famous Waterloo St. Hainanese Chicken Rice — The beloved stall shut on 27 May after 50 years of operations.
Good Stuff! Yong Tau Foo — All 3 outlets in Food Republic @ VivoCity, NTP+ and Kopitiam Square @ Sengkang Square shuttered in end May.
July
Number One Hundred 一百号 — The Chinatown Complex Food Centre stall shut as the owner felt that “hawkers have no future”, according to a Facebook post by a member of Can Eat! SG.
August
Zhong Xing Foochow Fish Balls & Lor Mee — The stall closed as the landlord of the coffeeshop that the stall was situated in indicated a considerable increase in rent, sparking the decision for the owners to retire and shut down the business.
Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice — The stall’s Changi outlet shut permanently, though its other 5 outlets remain open.
September
Claypot & Cooked Food Kitchen — According to netizens, the stall owner, Uncle Hong, fell last year and shattered his pelvic bone, causing a temporary closure. This year, the stall quietly closed for good, supposedly due to Uncle Hong’s injury causing recurring issues for him.
October
You Xiang Teochew Noodles — Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre’s most popular fishball noodle stall closed on 23 Oct after 39 years.
Toast Hut — The kaya toast and kopi stall shut after facing manpower issues.
December
Hong Sheng Restaurant — After more than 50 years, the 65-year-old owner, Lin, decided to close the stall for health reasons. She also stated that she doe not want her children to take over the stall.
