Ronald Cheng admits battle with alcoholism and depression

8 Aug - After previously announcing that he will go on hiatus after his Kaohsiung concert, Ronald Cheng revealed that he will be going to rehab for his alcohol problem.

In a long statement released on Facebook on 6 August, the singer revealed that he had always been a person who didn't know how to deal with stress and immaturity, and that despite having quit drinking following an incident in 2000, he eventually experienced relapse following the breakdown of his marriage with Charlene Choi.

"Until I met my wife, Miss [Sammie Yu], who made me feel like I was going to another stage of my life. We organised a family together, with two little children, and it was a very happy thing. But when faced with stress, work, and people, it turns out that my own problems have not been completely solved, many of them have not been able to communicate well, many of them have not been handled well, leaving my family disappointed," he said.

Ronald said that he was then advised to see a doctor, where he was found to suffer from depression. However, he made the mistake of drowning his problem with alcohol once again.

"I have used these past few days to reflect on myself. Being busy at work is no excuse. If you don't know how to communicate, you have to learn to communicate. I feel so sorry for the people in my house, especially my wife and children, sorry! I will use time and action to prove that I will work hard to be a husband and father," he added.

The singer then said that after solving the problem with his company, an issue that he earlier shared online, he will travel to the US with his wife to go to rehab for alcohol addiction.

"I'm going to figure out how to face myself, and then I can face everyone first. I hope to be a better self after I return," he added.
