Robynn Yip writes "Fifth of May" for late mother
24 Aug – Singer-songwriter Robynn Yip says that her new song, "Fifth of May" is a love letter to her late mother, who passed away many years ago.
The singer, who sat down for an interview recently, shared that she was inspired to write the song after finding a letter that her mother wrote in the past, where the latter expressed how proud she was of her daughter for going to a good university.
Robynn recalled that her deceased mother was a strong woman.
"My mother was successful in her career and worked hard to take care of others that she forgot to take care of herself. The song mentions that she was still very strong against cancer in the last stage of her life. I also remember how hard it was for me at the time. [Robynn & Kendy] had just debuted, and I never had the opportunity to share these feelings," she said.
With the singer currently seven months pregnant with her first child, she hopes that her mother in heaven would be very happy with the song she wrote her.
"Sometimes I fantasise how she would react at being a grandmother," she said.
Robynn also revealed that both she and her mother have the same persistence, though hers was music.
"When I decided to leave the record company that I had worked with for nine years, get married and prepare to be a mother, many people thought that I won't sing anymore. But I'm not willing to give up. Mummy once told me when she was in hospital that I didn't need to be successful, as long as I can be a happy singer," she said.
