REVIEW: Crystal Tomato Beyond Sun Protection sunblock is clinically-proven to protect against blue light
SINGAPORE – We spend most of our waking hours staring at screens, and, unfortunately for us, blue light penetrates more deeply than UV rays and makes your skin age faster. Blue light is light that’s emitted by electronic devices such as your smartphones, laptops and desktop screens.
Most conventional sunscreens do not have blue light protection so I was keen to try out the Crystal Tomato Beyond Sun Protection sunblock. According to one of the founders of the brand, Crystal Tan, it took her team five years in the making to create a sunscreen that’s clinically proven to offer 54.1% protection against blue light.
This is possible because the sunblock is made from an ingredient, that is a unique breed of non-genetically modified white tomatoes specially cultivated for use.
These tomatoes contain antioxidants known to help minimise damage from blue light as well as possibly repair skin.
It is not possible for me to prove the blue light protection claim - but I do feel safer using a sunscreen that has that benefit. I guess I can only know after a prolonged usage. My skin will thank me a few years down the road.
I tested out the efficacy of the SPF 75+ under the hot sun, at a balcony.
The texture is lightweight and non-greasy, something that is very important to me. It comes with a light dry touch for easy application and absorption.
If you have sensitive skin, this is also hypoallergenic, and also non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic so it will not clog pores and cause or worsen acne. The last thing I want is a heavyweight sunscreen that does not do my acne-prone skin good.
It also has the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) protection rating of 17+ and protection against environmental pollution such as infrared rays.
Beyond Sun Protection (50ml) is priced at S$78.80 (including GST) and available at Tangs, authorised medical aesthetic clinics, and selected premium spas.
