Renée Zellweger shoots for Oscar glory as Judy Garland in 'Judy' trailer

Renée Zellweger could be taking to the stage to win her second Oscar, if the first full trailer for Judy Garland biopic Judy is anything to go by.

The trailer reveals the 50-year-old actor’s portrayal of the Hollywood legend, who anchored studio classics including The Wizard of Oz and A Star is Born.

In the film, helmed by theatre director Rupert Goold, Garland travels to 1960s London to take on a role at West End venue The Talk of the Town, thousands of miles away from her children.

The movie will feature Zellweger singing many of Garland’s most famous tunes, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which is featured in the trailer.

Judy will trace the final years of Garland’s life, as the Hollywood icon passed away in 1969 at the age of 47 as a result of an overdose.

Zellweger previously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2003 for her role in American Civil War drama Cold Mountain.

She will be seeking her first Best Actress win for Judy, having been nominated for the award twice as a result of her work in Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago.

Social media users are already speculating that this could be the role that finally wins her that second gong.

As well as Zellweger, the film stars Wild Rose breakout Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell and Michael Gambon in supporting roles.

It’s a continuation of Zellweger’s big screen comeback, which started with threequel Bridget Jones’s Baby after she was absent from the cinema for six years.
