Refy's First Mascara Isn't As Frightening As It Looks

Refy’s First Mascara Is Not Like The OthersRosdiana Ciaravolo

I’m probably outing myself as a substandard beauty editor here, but I’ve never been excited by a mascara. Sure, I wear one almost every day, but I don’t have a firm favourite: any wand will do.

But when Refy’s first mascara offering landed on the beauty desk last week, I’ll admit my interest was piqued. The unassuming grey tube contains what might be the weirdest mascara wand in the industry: where most are bushy and cylindrical, this one is slender, curved and frankly, quite aesthetically frightening. Passing it around the beauty desk, we decided it would either be terrible or game-changing – and honestly, take this from someone that doesn't care about mascara, it is unquestionably game-changing.

Sure, we’ve had attention-seeking gimmicks in the mascara realm before: there was Givenchy’s now-discontinued Phenomen’Eyes, which involves a terrifying spiked ball in place of a spoolie, and Benefit’s lash-lengthening formula which claims to use an (equally terrifying) magnetic force to extend your lashes. But Lash Sculpt, which follows on from the cult hit Brow Sculpt (still the only product that graces the eyebrows of the ELLE team), is both weird and wonderful.

Not just funny-looking to cut through the increasingly crowded market, Lash Sculpt's streamlined wand genuinely brings something new to the table – and, depending on your preferred lash look, it may well become your new go-to.

The curved silicone wand creates immense separation and a completely clean result: think defined, glossy lashes that fan out to make eyes look bigger and wider. As it fits seamlessly around your eye, there's next-to-no risk of ending up with panda-like smudges, and even the tiniest lashes at the inner corners will be caught and coated. You won’t get mega volume or a dramatic black effect here, but rather a super-light and lifted finish that’ll have people peering curiously in an attempt to work out whether you're wearing extensions. If you’re after a clean, laid-back make-up look, it’s a must-try.

And while you're at it, if you still haven't jumped on the Brow Sculpt bandwagon, add one of those to your bag too.
