Production now underway on Scarlett Johansson's 'Ghost in the Shell'

Scarlett Johansson plays the Major in "Ghost in the Shell"

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have confirmed that production has now started on the upcoming film adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell."

Based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series, the comics were previously brought to the big screen by Mamoru Oshii in his iconic 1995 Japanese anime film.

This new adaptation sees Rupert Sanders of "Snow White and the Huntsman" directing, with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role as cyborg police cop Kusanagi.

Other confirmed cast members include Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, and Japanese actor and director Beat Takeshi Kitano.

"Ghost in the Shell" is due to be released in the US on March 31, 2017.
