Prince William And Kate Middleton Get Sporty as They Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary of Coaching Initiative
In 2012, the Royal Foundation launched the Coach Core initiative to support young people into sports and coaching apprenticeships as part of the legacy of the London Olympics. Today, the Prince and Princess of Wales returned to the Olympic Park site to celebrate 10 years of the program, which has so far helped more than 750 young people.
The royal couple got involved with sporting activities at the Copper Box Arena in east London, with William taking part in boxing and soccer and Kate trying her hand at wheelchair bowling. Town & Country understands that today is their final public appearance as part of a series of engagements designed to showcase the areas of work that they have made, and will continue to make, their focus. Both William and Kate have long-championed the benefits of sports and physical activity.
The Prince made a speech at the event, in which he described sports has having “an incredible way of providing hope, connection and opportunity.”
“When Coach Core was established ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, it was designed to use that power to help change young people’s lives,” he said. “Since then, more than 750 young people have been supported through the program, with 600,000 sports sessions delivered to 8 million participants.”
Kensington Palace said that the charity is now "looking ahead to the next 10 years,” and that “with a 5-year agreement in place with Sport England to become a systemic partner of change, the charity is embarking on an ambitious strategy to change more lives than ever before.”
Other areas that the royal couple has highlighted in recent weeks include mental health, sport, endangered wildlife, and the early years.
