Popular Toa Payoh stall, Mi Le Vegetarian, closes permanently after 30+ years
Toa Payoh residents should be familiar with Mi Le Vegetarian, a stall that has been at Toa Payoh Lorong 7, Block 18 for over 30 years.
Sadly, their time has come to an end and they have since permanently closed.
They’re one of the stalls that you’ll catch with a long queue in front of them during lunch hour, thanks to their affordable prices that start from S$3 for a packet of Vegetarian Bee Hoon. Despite the increasing costs everywhere, they’ve retained meals on a good budget.
The news of its closure was publicised through Mi Le Vegetarian’s Facebook profile on 11 Mar 2023, announcing that they would cease operations from 28 Mar 2023 onwards.
When the news was released, some patrons where shocked to see them seek retirement so early. A patron even said that “aunty and uncle not so old“, suggesting an inherent reason behind their closure. If they’re popular, budget-friendly, and the owners are considerably young, what could be the real reason of their closure?
Furthermore, Mi Le Vegetarian stated that “as much as we would like to continue serving you through another 30 years, it is with regret that circumstances do not allow it anymore.” Could it be the circumstances of high cost, rental, or personal reasons? Regular patrons have been quick to jump to assumptions by piecing the puzzle together. Some of them suspected that the rental cost increased by a large amount, forcing several tenants to shift out, and eventually forcing Mi Le Vegetarian into retirement.
With their closure, people were quick to reinforce that the owner of Mi Le Vegetarian “has a good heart”, as they kept their prices affordable for those in need.
On that note, it really is a pity to see more and more good stalls closing. The frequency of stalls in the F&B industry announcing their closure is definitely on the high.
With that said, I’m sure most of us can say that we will miss the home cooked fare that Mi Le Vegetarian has to offer. They do up a great variation of vegetarian sweet and sour pork, which is rare to master!
