Play after dark: The wonders of Singapore Night Festival 2024
Get ready for the ultimate nocturnal adventure as the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) returns to the Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) precinct! This year, the festival is going all out. For the first time in 15 years, the event will stretch across 3 weekends from 23 Aug to 7 Sep.
With the theme Art of Play, the festival pays homage to the area’s rich history, where some of Singapore’s first schools like St. Joseph’s Institution and Convent Of The Holy Infant Jesus were born. It’s also about rediscovering the joy of play and childhood, but with a creative twist.
So, what can you expect? A feast for the senses, of course! There are over 50 programmes to explore at this year’s Singapore Night Festival.
The festival will light up the BBB precinct with stunning projection mapping and night light installations by talented local and regional artists. As you stroll through the area, you’ll not only soak in the visual spectacle but also get to dive into the rich stories and traditions. Learn what makes places like the Peranakan Museum and other cultural buildings so special.
Even if you don’t intend to tour the entire map, you can still experience some of the installations on your day out. Passing through Funan Mall, you can interact with an immersive installation titled ‘Fortune Beads’ which resembles an abacus. Here, you can challenge your friends and family to a thrilling race by touching as many illuminated beads as possible within the time given.
And if that’s not enough, there’s a whole line-up of performances, one-of-a-kind experiences, and a variety of food and shopping options (with some exclusive deals) at 4 Festival Villages. These Festival Villages are spread across the precinct that includes CHIJMES, Singapore Management University Campus Green, Armenian Street and, the latest addition, Twilight Playground @ GR.iD.
At CHIJMES, you’ll be able to see first-hand, not one, but four projection mapping works featuring imaginative and whimsical designs! Relax at ‘Lounge At The Lawn’ as you take in the captivating show while munching on bar bites and beverages from Drinks & Co.
The star attraction of SNF 2024 is ‘Wonder World: The Machine of Nostalgia’, created by artist Sam Lo, also known as SKL0. This space whisks you back to the days of old-school amusement parks that lit up Singapore in the 1950s. Think carnival games, a charming carousel, and a swing ride that’ll have you feeling like a kid again — that’s exactly what the artist intended, for us to recapture that sense of youthful wonder.
Just like in those classic carnival scenes from the movies, there’s even a tarot reading booth that adds a touch of mystery and magic to the experience. And, there are more such booths to explore at Wonder World.
When the hunger hits, there’s no shortage of options to satisfy your cravings. You can sink your teeth into juicy burgers, cool off with creamy ice cream from Burnt Cones, or grab a refreshing drink to keep your energy up as you explore the rest of the festival. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite or a sweet treat, the variety of food stalls has got you covered.
But the fun doesn’t just stop there. The space also features a boxing ring where live performances take place, including poetry matches where poets from different generations go head-to-head in a verbal battle.
Do also keep an eye out for the marketplace actors roaming around. Whether it’s a policeman or an Otak-otak seller, they’re there to bring a touch of interactive theatre to your night, making the whole experience even more immersive.
Wonder World: The Machine of Nostalgia is open at Cathay Green from 23 to 25 Aug, 28 Aug to 1 Sep, and 4 to 7 Sep, from 7.30pm to 11pm. You can purchase your tickets on Klook. Tickets come with 10 tokens to redeem at the activities there.
Most of the programmes including performances in the BBB precinct are free to explore though. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to visit all the installations in one night. What are you waiting for? Embrace your inner child, Singapore’s rich heritage and enjoy the festivities!
