Pinterest Predicts Report: 2024's top home trendsBenjamin Moore

According to the Pinterest Predicts 2024 Report, after years of minimalist design and neutral colour schemes, bold looks and individuality will reign supreme in 2024.

Tom Revill, interior design expert and co-founder of Plank Hardware, agrees: 'Home decor trends for 2024 are all about maximalism, the revival of retro aesthetics and encouraging self-expression.'

Pinterest's report reveals: 'Silver tones and bold chromes are resonating right now. Metallics will enter the mainstream in 2024 as Gen Z and Millenials trade in their trusty neutrals for something a bit more hardcore'.

Not only have searches for 'aluminium furniture' increased by 45 per cent, but those for 'aluminium door design' have also increased by 70 per cent, too.

This rise in popularity is perhaps unsurprising, given that metallics were so popular in the noughties, and with trends revolving, it was about time metals made a comeback. If you like a contemporary look in your home, then stainless steel provides an uber-cool, neutral base.

Tom says: 'In addition to your work surfaces, let stainless steel hardware feature on your kitchen cupboards and utility cabinets, to create a cool and clinical first impression.'

There's also aluminium hardware to get experimental with. Though lightweight, it's still high quality and carries the hardiness that busy homes demand. Tom is a fan: 'I love the subtle texture of mottled aluminium hardware, which is untreated and in its raw form. Its mellow-metallic, grey-ish visual pairs perfectly with wooden cabinet fronts, in particular.'

What goes around, comes around – and this trend in harks back to the kitsch kitchens of the '70s.

Pinterest searches for 'eclectic kitchen decor' have increased by 50 per cent, while the hunt for 'kitschy kitchen' has gone up by 75 per cent and 'retro pink kitchens' by 40 per cent.

Chunky, 70s-inspired cylindrical shapes are growing so popular that in 2024 we're likely to say goodbye to straight lines and rigid designs altogether, and as a result, reinvent minimalist silhouettes.

Tom says: 'We’ll see bold 70s colours on kitchen walls and cabinetry, including punchy oranges, avocado greens and even mustard yellows. Having grown tired of minimalist silhouettes, we’ll be drawn to statement hardware with character in 2024.

'We expect to see cabinet handles with more playful silhouettes, taking inspiration from retro shapes. For instance, we’ll see 70s-inspired tubular cabinet handles. Plus, the bobbin motif will be seen across touchpoints, taken from the ornate, spherical-shaped furniture legs seen in the 17th century.'

Western gothic (mix vintage Americana chic with deep, moody hues) will be huge in 2024, according to the Pinterest Trends Report.

Searches for 'Western gothic' have increased by 145 per cent in 2023, and Pinterest expects to see everyone from Gen Z to Boomers using dark fringing and even darker paints to craft their own DIY decor.

Tom comments: 'This year we’ve seen people move away from the safety of a neutral colour scheme and explore the allure of dark and edgy aesthetics. To jump on this trend, infuse your living space with rich tones, moody hues and dramatic accents to excuse confidence. Add pops of colour, such as cobalt blue, that resonate with your personality.'

However, the trend doesn't stop there – the desire to create interiors inspired by country and classic homes in the USA – gothic or not – is strong. According to the report, searches for 'vintage Americana' have increased by 145 per cent and 'country room ideas' by 125 per cent.

Tom adds: 'Your grandma’s farmhouse kitchen is set to be a big interiors trend in 2024. We expect to see plenty of Shaker-style kitchens with panelled splashbacks and cabinetry painted with warm, enveloping colours, such as chocolate brown, all topped off with contrasting, vintage-inspired homeware.'

Why go to a cafe when you can have your own coffee corner at home? It's now increasingly popular to build a space that elevates the experience of your caffeine fix, and 2024 will see this continue with extra design flair and personalisation. According to Pinterest's report: 'This year at-home coffee stations will become the new way to espresso yourself.'

This is also a huge (and growing trend) on TikTok, with over 34.5 million views for #coffeestationdecor and five million views for #coffeestationathome.

Tom says: 'People are crafting cosy bespoke corners in the kitchen to brew their morning cup of coffee. It’s all about creating the perfect spot to fill your kettle and place your coffee machine, cups, syrups and more.'

You can even integrate your coffee corner into the rest of your kitchen cabinets by cleverly concealing it behind cupboard doors or tucking it away in a pantry.
