Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is so Groot. While you probably thought the film was absolute perfection, director James Gunn has admitted that there’s actually a small mistake in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And it has to do with the Marvel icon Stan Lee.

As you probably know, Stan Lee has appeared in every single Marvel movie (almost 30 in total!), each time with a little cameo. He’s saved a woman (Spider-Man 2), been mistaken for Hugh Hefner (Iron Man), helped recover Thor’s hammer (Thor), and more over the course of the past 17 years.

The latest Guardians of the Galaxy is no exception. In the film, we see Stan Lee talking about his time as a FedEx delivery man — implying that potentially all of his cameos are simply roles he plays as part of a larger role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of course there’s a Stan Lee Cinematic Universe.

The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that this role is potentially that of a Watcher — a race of aliens who observes important moments in history.

However, there’s a flaw in this storyline, because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actually occurs before Captain America: Civil War (the film in which we see Stan as the FedEx delivery man) in the MCU timeline. James Gunn addressed this error in his Facebook Q&A:

“I screwed up, I wasn’t thinking…but probably Stan Lee used the guise of a FedEx guy more than one time. It’s a mistake but it can be easily explained away.”

We’ll accept this explanation, just as long as we keep getting awesome Stan Lee cameos for the rest of time. Thank you!
