TikTok trends are quite a phenomenon because sometimes they peter out right after going viral, like the fruit roll-up ice cream or slushy cup that peaked long before TikTok Shop was on everyone’s FYP. 2022 was a year filled with trending “dirty” drinks, like the drink of the summer, Dirty Shirley. So, let me give you a quick refresher on what a dirty soda actually is, because it’s not the same as the alcoholic Shirley Temple.

Dirty soda originated in Utah, and is a term used to describe any drink that combines soda (typically a cola, but really any pop works) with cream and a flavored syrup. The drink has been beloved by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) for years—likely because LDS members typically abstain from drinking alcohol, coffee, and tea. As a result, many LDS members turn to sodas for their caffeine buzz—specifically dirty sodas.

Even though they’ve been around for more than a decade, the dirty soda trend became popular enough that so many people have now tried the drink (including us) since 2022. Dirty sodas have even found themselves on menus at mainstream restaurants like Sonic—when before you could only order them from the OG soda shops Swig and Sodalicious.
