Is it just me or have you also noticed the Iron Man lookalike masks sharing screen time in K-dramas, social media and most recently, Paris Hilton’s tell-all documentary on YouTube?
In fact, these light-emitting masks are nothing new. A couple of years back, they have already garnered a definite following with celebrities like Chrissy Teigen and Kate Hudson proudly sharing their beauty routine.

What do these superhero/creepy/bedroom/Halloween (circle where relevant) lookalike light-emitting masks do and how do they work to enhance our skin? We break it down for you.
Previously accessible only at dermatologists, these LED light therapy face masks emit a spectrum of light that produces different colours said to treat various skin conditions. For example, the blue light is for eradicating bacteria that causes acne while the red light is for calming inflammation, on top of boosting collagen production which in turn, reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Besides these two standard colours, some masks utilise other colours like yellow and green lights to reduce redness and lighten pigmentation, respectively.
In my simple thinking, it sounds akin to a smart garden using LED lights to help plants grow healthy, no?
But most importantly, is it safe?
According to a review published in February 2018 in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, LED masks have an “excellent” safety profile. You will be relieved to know that the technology of harnessing light therapy for skincare has been around for ages and you would probably have already benefitted from it at your dermatologist.
Do they really work?
It appears so. In a March 2017 study in Dermatologic Surgery of more than 50 women, researchers found that red LED light treatment improved the appearance of eye-area wrinkles. While a March/April 2017 issue of Clinics in Dermatology research found that red and/or blue light therapy for acne reduced blemishes by 46 to 76 per cent after 4 to 12 weeks of treatment.
Besides the above documentation, there are manifold benefits to having your very own LED face mask. Not only is it so much more affordable and accessible as compared to a doctor's visit, but you can also choose to do it regularly in your pyjamas! You can now stretch out your monthly dermatologist's visits and still look fabulous in-between doctor appointments. One vital pointer to take note: Always ensure the beauty device you purchase is FDA-certified.
