Nik Amir Mustapha didn't expect "Imaginur" would win big at FFM33
10 Dec - Despite his film "Imaginur" emerging the big winner at Malaysian Film Festival (FFM33), filmmaker Nik Amir Mustapha admitted that he and his team didn't expect that they would win the ultimate prize of Best Picture.
The director, who spoke to the media after the awards ceremony, stated that he really believed that Jin Ong's "Abang Adik" would win the category, seeing that the film has won multiple accolades overseas.
"Most importantly, the film was received positively not only here but also in Hong Kong and Taiwan," he said, adding that he should be learning from Jin Ong instead so that he can make even better movies in the future.
"I admire Jin because he is a smart director. I have to learn from him," he added.
It is noted that Jin was named Best New Director at the awards. "Abang Adik", which represents Malaysia for the Oscar's Best International Film race, also won four other categories, including Best Supporting Actor for Jack Tan, Best Screenplay, Best Costume and Best Makeup.
"Imaginur", on the other hand, won seven categories including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Story.
