Netizens criticise Wu Jinyan's acting in new drama
30 Jan – Chinese actress Wu Jinyan recently became the butt of jokes for some netizens, who criticised her for the unconvincing performance she gave in the first episode of her new drama, "The Legend of Haolan".
As reported on Mingpao, the first episode of the drama saw Wu's titular character being framed and witnessing her mother drowning in a well. Netizens who saw the drama criticised Wu's performance as the actress shed no tears at all in her crying scene.
This isn't the first time the actress was criticised for her acting, as she also faced similar comments about her performance in "Story of Yanxi Palace". However, viewers slowly grew to love her character in the said drama as it went on.
Following the backlash, producer Yu Zheng, who produced both "Story of Yanxi Palace" and "The Legend of Haolan", took to social media to defend Wu.
In a long post he published on Weibo, Yu stated that it is ridiculous to assume that people will just cry whenever they are facing such a devastating tragedy.
"Let me tell you, people don't cry when they encounter such a thing, because the brain would be unwilling to accept this information," he said.
Yu also used this example of Maggie Cheung in the movie "Comrades: Almost a Love Story".
"When [Maggie] saw [Eric Tsang's character] lifeless body, she smiled first before she cried. This is because sadness takes time to come," he said, stressing that Wu's performance has progressed leaps and bounds since starring in "Story of Yanxi Palace".
In response, netizens blasted Yu for comparing Wu's acting to Maggie Cheung's award-winning performance, adding that the two scenes were not similar at all.
