I Go to Music Festivals with My Mom and I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way—Here's Why

Ask any 20-something-year-old right now about music festivals and they'll probably mention how it's a time to party with friends, drink overpriced two-ingredient cocktails, and ~bE oNe~ with the vibes. But if you ask lil ole' me, a 25-year-old, music festivals are a time to sing, dance, drink, and eat your heart away with your mom (yes, thy mother) for three days straight with no interruptions from the outside world.

Something I must add before I go on: About a month ago, very disappointing news about Coachella broke. Turns out, their parent company AEG Live donated tons of money to an anti-abortion organization, and now I’m honestly not sure if I’ll go back. It made me sick to my stomach learning this information. It's disgusting. It's infuriating. It's disrespectful. But the only bright side to all of this is that this ringing endorsement to chill with your mom applies to allllll music festivals, not just Coachella.

To remember the before times, let's go back to the year 2017. Obviously, I wasn't going alone to Coachella. But honestly, the thought of going with friends didn't really sound that fun to me. I know! Tbh, I didn't wanna have to worry about people not getting along or feeling responsible if someone wasn't having a good time (yes, I am a Virgo). So that's why I asked my mom—my dear birth giver and #1 bestie who loves a girl's night out—to be my festival buddy. Yup, this is 100 percent your sign to ditch the idea of going a music festival with your buds and go with your mom instead—and here's why.

She'll probably be more into the idea of spending the extra $$$ on VIP tickets than your friends.

If you went to a music festival with your friends and brought up the idea of dropping a lil over $1,000 on VIP tickets, the majority of them would balk and shut it down (I'm speaking from experience). And this is totally fair! A thousand bucks is more than some rent checks. But I was willing to make a deep dent in my bank account (I am no rich girlie whatsoever) so that I could get the full festival experience without feeling stressed or overly exhausted. And thankfully, so was Mama Coco.

She wasn't exactly up for the ~authentic~ adventure of waiting in 30-minute food lines or sitting in random, dusty, unshaded corners to take a breather like my spring chicken, high-on-life friends would've been. We were both more than okay with spending more cash in exchange for shorter food and bathroom lines, shaded seating areas, exclusive viewing sections, and guaranteed phone service. So, if you're interested in the idea of living the #VIPLyfe at a music festival, ask your mom if she'd do it with ya.

She'll take alllll your pics with a smile on her face. (And won't stop until you get The One.)

Unpopular opinion: Your mom is a better photographer than your BFFs. I said what I said! Come on, she knows your angles. Because I mean, she birthed you. And she'll always follow your lead because she only wants to make you happy and see you shine! As long as you give your mom the main pointers, she's gonna nail the job. Promise.

Want proof? No prob. Peep my mom's 🔥 fire 🔥 work that she's done over the years. Don't everrrr underestimate mama.

Speaking of outfits! Festival fashion is obviously a thing and is one of the most exciting parts about going to these things. Check out some of the fashion and beauty products I wore to this year's Coachella, ahead. PSA: These have also been mom-approved.

She'll make it her mission to get you as close as you can to the stage.

One of my mom's strongest traits is that that woman is determined AF. You give her some sort of a task or challenge, she'll do it her best and will not let anything or anyone get in the way of accomplishing it. So you can imagine how my mom gets whenever I tell her that I've gotta see a musician up close and personal.

Thanks to my five-foot-one mom and her sturdy elbows I have felt the precious sweat of Kehlani, seen almost every single tooth in Big Sean's beautiful mouth, and was so close to making direct eye contact with Lady Gaga. (Alright, that one might be a stretch but you get it.)

She'll have your back if you ever, like, pass out.

Sh*t happens, my friends—especially at music festivals. It's hot. It's crowded. And when you're someone like me, who's four-foot-eleven inches, and the size of a fifth grader, the crowds are an absolute nightmare. I won't get into the nitty-gritty of it, but shout-out to Coco for quite literally saving my life when I fainted in an insane mosh pit at Coachella 2017. Without her motherly and nurse superpowers, I don't even wanna know what could've happened.

She'll drive if you need her to.

Shockingly (LOL), I have never needed my mom to DD for me at one of these things, though, I am thankful that she was up for it if I couldn't drive. But! This year particularly, we had a beautiful, free Mercedes-Benz E 450 Cabriolet—aka the most fabulous convertible ever—to ourselves the whole trip. Thank you times a BILLION to Mercedes-Benz!! I sure as hell wasn't going to pass up any opportunity to not drive this babe. Are you kidding me?! And my mom def didn't mind being driven around in a drop-top for five days. See the blue beauty for yourself:

Word of advice for you and your mama on cars and music festivals: If you two are looking to rent one, do anything you can to snag a gorgeous vehicle like this. Not only does she fit the festival aesthetic almost too perfectly, but she also was the smoothest ride e-v-e-r. You can imagine that leaving her behind was very painful for us.

Moms are THE best singing and dance partners. Point blank period.

There's no better person than your mom to sing and dance with, at least in my opinion. I'll just let this Tok talk for me in this one:

Love you, mom. Can't wait to dance and scream sing at the next music festy with ya. <3
