Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons Just Get It

Prada is committed to elevating your everyday clothes into something magical.

Even amid shifts within its management structurePrada proves that one thing remains constant: quality beautiful clothing.

Taking over the Fondazione Prada yet again, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons presented a Fall 2023 collection grounded in the basics. While fashion is often about creating a fantasy or spectacle, the designers underscore the importance of reflecting the reality of how people dress. Just because something is utilitarian doesn't make it basic — if anything, that's what makes it so special.

Fall 2023 "reconceptualizes, reconsiders and ultimately rediscovers ideas of beauty," the show notes read. "Beauty here is determined not by aesthetic, but by action — garments are signs, representations of the beauty of care, of love, of reality."

Prada and Simmons achieve this by reframing the brand's signature uniforms ("sartorial representations of care and responsibility") with a more elevated eye, updating these pieces with techniques and accoutrements we expect in eveningwear: wedding dresses reimagined as white skirts, embellished with romantic flowers but styled with simple knits; long-sleeved shirt dresses trailed by pretty trains; boxy, oversized jackets juxtaposed against slim-cut trousers.

"This exchange, between the notion of the everyday and occasion wear, the familiar and the exceptional, gives a different importance to both," per the show notes.

Within this idea of familiarity also lies a sense of safety — clothes that feel comforting, almost protective. That's reflected in the cocoon shapes seen throughout Fall 2023, across various menswear-inspired jackets and on the backs of shift dresses.

The collection evokes the simplicity of Prada in the '90s: A white midi skirt with floral appliqués is reminiscent of a textured tank top from the Spring 1992 collection, while a wrapped mini skirt also recalls that era of the brand. Another throwback, but only to 2016, is the fact that Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid both walked the Fall 2023 show, despite sitting out the New York and London runways this season. And model Liu Wen, ubiquitous in the 2010s, made her return to modeling as the show's closer.
