Michelle Yeoh‘s Malaysian accent in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ brings out the memes
Malaysian screen legend Michelle Yeoh’s latest outer space adventure (no, not “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”) sees her take on the role as the captain of the USS Shenzhou.
As Captain Philippa Georgiou, Yeoh featured prominently in the “Star Trek: Discovery” trailer… together with her Malaysian accent.
The move has been applauded for adding even more diversity to the show, although some people have taken offence.
Nonetheless, Yeoh’s accent has got many excited, with Malaysian site Rojak Daily calling for captions on their Facebook page for the occasion.
Here are some of the best they compiled:
“Star Trek: Discovery” is set about a decade before the events of the original “Star Trek” series which aired in 1966.
Its timeline is separate from the one seen in the current big-screen feature films, which follow an alternate timeline thanks to Spock doing some Doctor Who timey-whimey space magic when he went back in time in 2009’s “Star Trek”.
“Star Trek: Discovery” will premiere on Netflix in mid-2017.
