Mek Yun wants stricter law for cyberbullying

19 Jul - Social media influencer Mek Yun is calling for the Malaysian government to pass stricter laws when it comes to the crime of cyberbullying.

Addressing the recent tragic end to fellow TikTok influencer Esha who ended her life after being repeatedly bullied on social media, Mek Yun, real name Wee Yun Nee, said that there is a need for a more efficient law that can combat the issue of cyberbullying.

"I think this matter is very serious as it is able to ruin lives. It cannot be taken lightly. I really hope that if such an incident occurred again, we have a stricter law that can prevent it," she said to mStar during the press conference of the new series, 'Perang Nasi Dagang".

Admitting that she used to be bullied online through harsh comments about her body, Mek Yun, however, said that she had used the negativity as a motivation to lose weight.

"But each individual has a different level of mental health and because of that, we have to be more careful in using social media. Netizens' words have a huge impact on the influencers. You should think before leaving any comments," she said.

Earlier this week, netizens were enraged after hearing that the woman who plead guilty to using abusive words towards the late Esha, was fined only RM100 by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court.
