Malaysia's Nuha Jes Izman is now part of US hit TV series, "Yellowjackets"
3 Apr – With Michelle Yeoh winning Best Actress at the Academy Awards, more and more Malaysian actors are showing up in Hollywood.
The latest in the roster is Nuha Jes Izman, who made her sophomore US TV debut in the second season of "Yellowjackets", playing the role of the mysterious theatre nerd, Crystal. It is noted that she previously guest appeared in the series, "FBI".
While she may be new in Hollywood, Nuha is no stranger to acting, having started performing with her father's organisation, the Tree Theatre Group, which held plays to raise awareness about environmental issues. She flew to New York City soon after she graduated high school, and began to train at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.
Speaking about how she got the role in a recent interview with W Magazine, Nuha stated that she submitted a single video of herself reading a fake scene that had also been deployed for Misty auditions in season one.
"I was on my sister's couch, I had like 12 dollars in my bank account, and then I got the call," she said. "The director emailed me and was like, 'By the way, are you trained in tap dancing and singing?' I was like, 'No, ma'am, I am not. But I will do it."
When asked how she approached her character Crystal, the actress said that she tapped into her own high school self, saying that she would try to emulate her friends because she wanted them to like her.
"I was like, oh that's a really cool way to play it because then the audience doesn't know, does she mean something evil behind this imitating Misty or is she just trying to find a way to fit in?" she said.
The thriller drama, created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, revolves around a group of a high school girls' soccer team who are left stranded for more than a year in the wilderness after their plane crashes. It is told from two perspectives - during the ordeal, as well as from the perspectives of the survivors 25 years later.
