Mention the name Jovian Mandagie, and many fans of modest fashion go wild. Not only is the Malaysian designer a dashing soon-to-be father, but his brand of ready-to-wear (RTW) collections and bridal couture gowns have been much sought-after by celebrities across the border.

In Singapore, Jovian’s RTW pieces quickly sell out during the annual Hari Raya fashion sale on online store ZALORA. Some Singaporeans even travel to Kuala Lumpur to get their hands on his stylish and feminine outfits that are considered by fans to be perfect for festive and formal occasions.

Ahead of Singapore Fashion Week (SGFW) in late October 2017, the 31-year-old designer revealed to Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore his plans to launch a JStore outlet in the country, his thoughts about the rise of modest fashion around the world, and his love for Singapore.

1. What do you normally look forward to during your visits to the Republic?

I visit regularly for the food and, of course, to shop! I also make it a point to visit my Singaporean friends while there. I am currently planning on opening another JStore outlet, in Singapore, so I am very sure that my visits will become more frequent. Do wait for the surprise, Singapore!

2. Where do you normally go to when you come to visit?

I normally stay along Orchard Rd, and I regularly visit Marina Bay Sands for its amazing selection of restaurants. Royz et Vous in Marina Bay Sands has got to be my personal favourite, and I never miss the opportunity to visit the restaurant. Hands down, they serve the best Halal steak in town. I’ve recently discovered areas like Arab Street and Haji Lane, and I am very stoked to explore more of these areas and check out the fabric stores there.

3. What can we expect from Jovian Mandagie’s fashion show at this year’s SGFW?

We will be bringing our Ready-To-Wear line to this year’s SGFW, which will definitely be different from the rest of the shows that we have presented. We are known to always make a “Pretty & Feminine” dress, but at this year’s SGFW we will parade a different side of Jovian that is more daring, edgy and rebellious. A show not to be missed, and this is definitely how I foresee the brand Jovian will be accepted internationally.

4. This will be the first time that Singapore Fashion Week will be highlighting modest fashion wear in its lineup. What do you think of this new development?

I think it’s a great step and definitely a fresh move, as modest wear is now expanding globally. It can help fashion industries who carry modest wear to be more recognised and to show that modest wear today is already a trend. Modest wear is no longer a stereotype of a black robe that represent your religion, instead it expresses your identity & personality.

6. Modest fashion has become increasingly popular in recent months, with more models walking the world’s runways wearing hijabs. What do you think of this phenomenon?

Modest fashion has changed drastically from traditional, to becoming a very universal trend which is not necessarily related to Islam or Muslim wearers only. Modesty is also cherished by non-muslims nowadays who prefer to be decent in their style. With that rapid growth, this market has changed the game. Everyone takes modest fashion very seriously, and it will doubtless grow globally, especially in countries which have a large number of Muslims.

7. What is the most common fashion advice you tell your clients?

Trend is merely a guideline. Don’t fall victim to a trend just to be accepted in society. It will only make you a fashion victim. Dress comfortably and be brave to express yourself through fashion.

8. If you can recommend a place in Malaysia to Singaporeans, what would it be and why?

Definitely the beach! Malaysia is well known for our beautiful islands and I would definitely recommend Singaporeans to experience our beaches. Pulau Langkawi and Pulau Perhentian are two places that are a hit even with locals, but if you want to enjoy the clear blue sea or just in need of ‘Vitamin Sea’ I would highly recommend Pulau Rawa in Johor, or even Pulau Sipadan in Sabah!

SGFW takes place from 26 to 28 October at the National Gallery Singapore. Other headlining designers include Jason Wu and Singaporean designer Laichan.
