Singapore Fashion Week 2017 to feature modest fashion and celebrity designer Jason Wu

This year’s Singapore Fashion Week (SGFW) will return from 26 to 28 October at the National Gallery. The annual event, which has been shortened to three days, will feature a collection by celebrity designer Jason Wu, as well as those from modest fashion designers such as Jovian Mandagie and Dian Pelangi.

“In this age of digital disruption, fashion weeks need to adapt, change and reinvent to stay relevant and sustainable. We are pleased to present more than 50 Asian designers, the largest number the fashion week has ever seen on its runway,” said SGFW chairman Tjin Lee in a press release. During previous years, SGFW took place across five days.

Wu is a well-known fashion designer who has created dresses for public figures including Michelle Obama. The 34-year-old was born in Taiwan and is currently residing in New York. At this year’s SGFW, Wu will be showcasing his Spring 2018 collection.

He will also join one of the panels for the event’s inaugural Fashion Tech summit called ZIPCODE, which will take place across two days. During the summit, industry players will discuss topics including their personal experiences and the future of fashion.

SGFW is also partnering with modest fashion retail platform MODESTyle to present a series of three runway shows by over 15 modest fashion designers. Some of these designers include Malaysia’s Jovian Mandagie and Indonesia’s Dian Pelangi, who recently made headlines for debuting her modest wear collection at this year’s New York Fashion Week.

Separately, there will be a MODESTyle Trunk Show happening at Tampines Mall where you will see collections from over 30 modest fashion designers hailing from countries such as Dubai and Turkey.

“We are excited to bring the biggest names in modest style from all around the region to SGFW, uniting varied modest cultures, traditions and fashion, and helping designers leverage the potential of the modest style market in this part of Asia,” said Timothy Chen, group CEO of MODESTyle.

Singaporean designer Laichan, dubbed the “grandmaster of cheongsam”, will be opening this year’s SGFW. More information about SGFW can be found on their official website.
