Lukumades: Bite into freshly-fried sweet Greek doughnut balls from Australia
Lukumades. For a week, the name which I was never once familiar with kept popping up on my social media feed. Quick Google search revealed: Greek doughnut balls. Definitely a first for Malaysia.
This popular vegan-friendly Greek doughnut store first started out in Melbourne and has officially opened their very first store in SS15, Subang Jaya.
A little history lesson before we dig into some sweet balls. It is said that this dessert can be traced as far back as the first Olympic Games of 776 B.C. Winners would be served deep-fried and honey-coated dough balls. Mmmm… definitely a delicious reason to inspire a win— something I wish my PE teacher would have offered us.
What I tried at Lukumades
Admittedly, I was spoiled by the variety, so what does one do when faced with such a dilemma? Order almost everything off the menu (and make an appointment with my dentist later)!
I started off my Greek journey with the Oreo Balls (RM18). Freshly-fried doughnuts drenched in a luscious pouring of warm white chocolate and topped with crushed Oreos. Crispy on the outside, and chewy on the inside, the balls were a treat on their own. However, I found the white chocolate to be far too sweet for my liking. Unless you have an insatiable sweet tooth, 10 extremely sweet doughnut balls are definitely tough to swallow down.
I moved on to greener pastures with the Matcha Balls (RM18)— doughnut balls coated in a milky Matcha coating and sprinkled with Matcha powder. I personally adore Matcha so I definitely enjoyed this. It also helped that the matcha was not very sweet, so it paired well. And yes, the Matcha Balls are actually one of their best sellers.
Dark chocolate fans, it’s time to put your hands up! The Dark Delight (RM18)— doughnut balls coated with dark chocolate and crushed pistachios truly lived up to its name. My food companion and I nodded to this being a winner. Definitely for those looking for a not-so-sweet dessert.
What is dessert if it doesn’t involve Nutella, right? Lukumades’ Tella Classic (RM20) speaks for itself— doughnut balls coated in Nutella and crushed biscuits. Yes, Nutella is undoubtedly delicious but it didn’t really elevate the already tasty crispy doughnut balls. You’d be better off with the other flavours.
Calling all Biscoff fans, where are you guys at? You’ll definitely want to try the Lotus Crunch (RM20)— freshly-fried doughnut balls coated in melted Biscoff and topped with crushed Lotus biscuits. Despite having not joined the rest of the world when the Biscoff cult started, I found myself enjoying the caramelised flavour along with the gentle hints of cinnamon.
You’d probably smell Lukumades’ Peanut Butter Balls (RM18) from a mile away. Drenched in peanut butter sauce, this dessert is made even more indulgent with the addition of milk chocolate drizzle, and of course topped with crushed peanuts. I found the peanut butter to be overwhelmingly rich for me but my companion devoured it with bliss.
So all the doughnut balls mentioned above are fried and coated with sauce. But don’t forget to sample Jam it! (RM18). Unlike the rest, strawberry jam is injected into the freshly-fried doughnut balls and is later dusted with cinnamon sugar. Pop one into your mouth and it’s like a sugar-laden breakfast.
At this point, I had pretty much devoured everything coated with sauce so when they brought out The O.G (RM15), it paled in comparison to the others. At first bite, my companion and I instantaneously agreed this flavour took the crown. The simple but humble combination of Australian honey and cinnamon was indeed heavenly. It wasn’t death defyingly sweet, but pleasant on the taste buds, enough to make you want another. I understand why Olympic winners were awarded this now.
If the sweetness gets too overwhelming, you can head to the counter and ask for a Freddo Cappuccino. It’s not on the menu, but the barista will make one for you. The freddo is a Greek beverage that’s been sipped for decades. It’s an iced coffee drink made from fresh espresso and frothed milk. The cold milk foam reminded me of beer foam and it’s honestly one of the best coffees I’ve had in a while.
Final thoughts
One downside of these greek doughnuts is that if you don’t consume them in 30 minutes, the sauce hardens, and the doughnut balls become cold and unappetising. So it’s definitely something you can’t take away. Also be prepared to wait as once the order is placed, the doughnut balls are then fried to ensure the signature crispy exterior and chewy interior. If you find yourself with an aching sweet tooth, Lukumades is definitely a place to drop by.
P.S— Don’t forget to order the Freddo Cappuccino!
Expected damage: RM18 – RM22 per pax
