Lego Group today (16 June) announced the full product portfolio for its Lego Super Mario Experience, with a whole new range of Expansion sets, collectible character packs and power-up packs.

This whole range is a collaboration between Lego and Nintendo, under the supervision of Takashi Tezuka, who is a dear friend of Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario Brothers.

In a Zoom call with Jonathan Bennink, Digital Design Lead for Lego, he shared with Yahoo Lifestyle SEA that, “most of the sets are taken from the Super Mario video game but then some of the sets are also inspired by the building functions with Lego bricks.”

“For instance, the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion set you've just played (video below); that's not taken directly from the game, but you wouldn't find this way of putting it together in the games and that's just because we really liked that function.”

“Other parts of the game like the fortress or the bouncy castle are of course taken directly from the game so it's a bit of a mixture of,” he added.

In addition to the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion set and Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion set which were announced in April, the Expansion set line-up includes The Guarded Fortress, the Mario’s House & Yoshi, Toad’s Treasure Hunt, the Desert Pokey, the Whomp’s Lava Trouble, and the Boomer Bill Barrage.

Having tried my hand at building the Piranha Plant Power Slide, it’s amazing to see how the sets are digitally focused. First, you’ll need to download the Lego Super Mario app which will help you to assemble with a step-by-step guide. Each separate set comes with a guide, and you can manoeuver the bricks almost 360 degrees to see where to click and expand. Very cool!

Of course, the heart of this game is the Lego Mario character, which will come alive with two AAA batteries. His eyes will beam and his mouth will flicker, but most of all, a built-in display on his chest will show how many coins you’ve collected after you bop him on codes that are sprinkled around the sets.

Up to your imagination, you can even join all expansion sets together to make the ultimate Lego Super Mario experience, and we can already imagine kids playing for hours. Be right back, buying this for my nephews!

The full Lego Super Mario assortment will launch 1 August but fans can pre-order the Starter Course here.
