Jolin Tsai shares lesson in self-acceptance in "Ugly Beauty"

2 Jan – Taiwanese pop diva Jolin Tsai admitted that her new single, "Ugly Beauty" is as much about leaving the negativity she experienced in the past as it is about loving oneself.

As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who attended the launch of her new album in Beijing recently, revealed that the music video looks back at all the things that she has been criticised for and what she used to think about herself.

She also spoke about the "fat Jolin" scene in the music video, where she looks into the mirror and sees a fat girl staring back at her.

Describing it to be "psychologically fat", Jolin admitted that at one point in her career, she thought she looked fat even when she weighed only 45kg.

"I didn't know what beautiful means. I look around and saw a lot of beautiful girls, but thought that I was the ugliest," she said.

Jolin admitted that she didn't know it at first that she was depressed, but that she even considered leaving showbiz at the time as she felt so sad and unhappy about herself.

However, the singer assured that she now values the balance between her body and mind, and would not keep herself busy with work.

"I let myself have a break. I now value travel, and would always look forward to my next holiday," she enthused.

When asked if there is anything she would say to her past self, Jolin's eyes suddenly teared up as she admitted that she has learned not to feel stressed if her wardrobe choice that day is not great or that her song is being criticised.

"I want to thank my past self, and promise to have a much more exciting future," she said.
