In the run-up to sale season in November, we’ll be keeping an eye out for a John Lewis Black Friday sale. The high street favourite sells a wide-ranging selection of everything from homeware to toys, so a big sale makes a great opportunity to tick the Christmas gifts off your shopping list and treat yourself to something at a great price.
Previously, we’ve seen reductions from 20% to 70% across the brand’s full range over the Black Friday period. Last year, the discounts were live for a full month, when the brand quietly dropped prices in early November in the run-up to the big event. We’re hoping for more of the same in 2023.

There were big discounts in the John Lewis Black Friday sale last year, with the retailer offering up to 70% off tech and electronics, up to 40% off homeware and furniture and up to 30% off beauty and fashion. Here’s a breakdown of the best finds from last year.

Lots of basics, including towels, bedding, lighting and cleaning and storage solutions were reduced by up to 40%. Furniture and decorative accessories were also discounted by 30%, giving you a chance to refresh your space for less.

Tech saw some of the biggest price reductions. You could save up to £200 on Samsung TVs and laundry appliances, and up to 70% on vacuums, fridges, Apple products, speakers and headphones. Small appliances like coffee machines, toasters and kettles were also reduced, including on top brands such as Vitamix and Smeg.

A wealth of beauty and skincare products had pleasing – and rare – discounts, including 15% off luxe buys from Charlotte Tilbury and Aesop, and 20% off cult haircare products from Olaplex. My John Lewis members could also save £75 on a pair of Dyson Corrale straighteners.

There was a 30% off sale on selected fashion lines, including on the likes of Barbour, Mulberry, Jigsaw, Mint Velvet and Phase Eight. Knitwear, bags, shoes and dresses were all discounted, just in time for the Christmas party season.
What should I look out for in the John Lewis Black Friday sales?
From furniture and homeware to beauty essentials and electronics, John Lewis usually has a huge range of products on sale in November. But how to make your money go the furthest?
Well, with Black Friday typically offering the best discounts seen all year, it’s a good time to pick up any larger-ticket items on your wishlist, like a new sofa, bed frame or mattress. If you need to make a bigger purchase, this is when you’ll see the best value for money on quality essentials you’ll use for years to come.
It’s also a chance to stock up on Christmas bits in good time. Party dresses, tree decorations, tableware and those hot-ticket items on your Christmas list are all typically reduced by at least 20% over the sales weekend.
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is an annual sales event that takes place on the last weekend of November. It typically sees partaking retailers drop prices from around 20% to 50% across the majority of lines.
The tradition started in the States where stores ran sales to mark the end of the Thanksgiving period and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Traditionally, most sales were held in stores and eager shoppers would queue from the early hours to snag bargains, but now they’re typically online.
The first UK Black Friday sale was held in 2010 by Amazon and the trend has grown steadily ever since. Now most retailers, large and small, tend to offer at least some price reductions over the weekend.
When is Black Friday 2023?
The Black Friday weekend runs from Friday 24 November until Monday 27 November, otherwise known as Cyber Monday – so-called as it was historically the day brick-and-mortar stores ended their sales and online retailers picked up. Nowadays, partaking brands tend to cut prices both online and in-store across the whole sales weekend.
Keep an eye out for flash sales. Lots of brands offer discounts early, sometimes throughout the whole of November. Amazon usually offers exclusive early discounts to Prime members, and last year John Lewis quietly dropped its Black Friday deals in early November, giving shoppers ample time to find the best bargains.
What else can I get in the Black Friday sales?
During the Black Friday sales, we always see big price cuts on thousands of lines across homeware, beauty, fashion and tech.
You can expect fantastic discounts on homeware and furniture, with a wealth of interior brands reducing prices by up to 60%. Dunelm, Wayfair and Very tend to hold generous sales, as do Le Creuset and Our Place, which have both dropped prices on their coveted cookware ranges by up to 50% in the past.
It’s also a fabulous time to pick up some furniture or replace your mattress. GHI top-performing bedding brands Simba and Emma usually offer up to 70% off their range of premium bedding buys. We always spot lots of Black Friday sofa deals and bed deals, with typical discounts of up to 50%.
There are always generous fashion and beauty sales, with the likes of Boden, GAP and Mango all cutting prices by up to 50% in past sales. Prestige beauty brands, including Elizabeth Arden, Bobbi Brown and Clarins, have all also reduced prices by up to 40% in previous Black Friday events.
If you’re looking for new tech or electronics, Currys and AO usually offer good discounts. Currys offered up to 70% off a good variety of products in 2022 and. AO offered up to £100 off selected laptops and tablets.
