Jodie Foster Was Almost Part of the 'Star Wars' Universe
Can you imagine Jodie Foster uttering the iconic line, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope,” while wearing her hair in the shape of a pineapple? Well, you nearly got it.
Foster recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show while promoting True Detective: Night Country, reflecting on her previous roles during the visit. During the interview, Fallon brought up a rumor that Foster had been offered the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars. “I was, yeah,” Foster said. “They were going for a younger Princess Leia but I had a conflict. I was doing a Disney movie and I just didn’t want to pull out because I was already under contract.”
If the space-time continuum could be manipulated, the first thing we'd do is fix it so that the Star Wars franchise had already been part of Disney in 1977 when Foster was offered the role. Don't get us wrong, we're still die-hard Carrie Fisher fans, but Foster's take on the iconic character would have been an undeniably compelling spin on the intergalactic princess. Not that Foster agrees with us. “I don’t know how good I would have been,” Foster said. “I might have had different hair, you know. I might have gone with a pineapple.”
Of course, there's been no shortage of incredible Foster performances. She's currently appearing on screen on Max every Sunday night as Liz Danvers in True Detective: Night Country. This season, led by new showrunner, Issa López, centers on Foster's character and her crime solving partner, Evangeline Navarro, played by Kali Reis. The duo tries to unravel the mystery of the death of eight research scientists in the frozen tundra of rural Alaska. As always, this is no typical Law and Order procedural; things start getting supernatural and super creepy right off the bat.
